Lydia Night is raging against the machine. And the machine drinks a warm cup of lemon water first thing in the morning. “Seeing all these people that are doing so well, drinking lemon water, and going on a run at 5 am and they’re so happy because of that,” said Night. The 21-year-old singer and rhythm guitarist of L.A. pop-rock upstarts, The Regrettes, is talking of the kind of people who inspired the songs on their energetic third album, Further Joy. The rest of the band chuckles. Guitarist Genessa Gariano says Night was always someone she could turn to when it came to mental health. When they formed their band, normalizing those teen insecurities — exploited by a multi-billion-dollar wellness industry — became a central focus of the music on their debut, Feel Your Feelings Fool! For drummer Bobby Z, the decision to film and record Prince and the Revolution’s stop at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, on the tail end of the band’s Purple Rain Tour was an apt decision based on its reverence as one of the most iconic shows of the era. “It was close to the end of the tour, and it was a compromise to not continue the tour into Europe and Japan,” he tells SPIN over the phone. “He was already kind of bored and had moved on. Around the World in a Day was already in the can before we played Detroit. He’d always be onto the next thing. So this particular show, with the satellite feed and the Carrier Dome being somewhat bigger than the normal arena, he loved all of that pressure. He’d put all of this tremendous pressure on himself, and then would feel it and rise to the...
The CMA Fest is prohibiting any Confederate flag imagery at its four-day festival, following similar bans at other country music festivals. In a statement provided to The Tennessean, the Country Music Association said the decision to enact the policy this year was based on the personal safety of fans and to prevent discrimination. “This year’s CMA Fest is our first major fan-facing event in nearly three years. We have always had policies in place that protect the safety of our fans and ban discrimination, but we felt it was important to further refine our language to explicitly outline what will and will not be tolerated,” the statement said. After a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual festival that began in 1972 returns to Nashville, Tennessee, star...
Ringo Starr finally made it to Boston on Thursday (June 2) to receive his honorary degree from the Berklee College of Music. The school originally announced that the Beatles drummer would receive a doctorate in music at commencement ceremonies in May, but Starr was unable to attend then and instead addressed the graduating class in a recorded statement. In the video, Starr banged around on a kit before sending his customary “peace and love” greeting while congratulating the class of ’22 .”I’m a doctor at last! I never went to college, but I certainly have had a lot of experience making music, so I supposed I earned this in my own way,” he said. But with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band in town for a show, the school held a special ceremony Thursday to honor his lifelong contribution...
In 1999, Pavement put out the single “Spit On a Stranger,” pairing it with the B-side track “Harness Your Hopes” as a CD-only release. A decade later, in 2008, the band’s 1997 album Brighten The Corners was released in expanded form to digital retailers like Apple’s iTunes Store, complete with bonus tracks and B-Sides from those sessions, including “Harness Your Hopes,” which appeared digitally for the first time. And that’s where the journey for many of those songs would have ended: as footnotes and rarities for collectors and superfans. But the rise of streaming and social media changed all that. In 2017, for reasons that are still a little mysterious to both the band and its label Matador, “Harness Your Hopes” began to explode on Spotify, leaping into the top spot among Pavement’s most-...
