What the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard Verdict Means for Depp’s Future Career

It seems like an inevitability, at this point: Johnny Depp will be back on the big screen again soon. Not that he’s felt exactly absent from our screens over the last several months, as his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard raged not just in a Virginia courtroom but across the entire Internet. The resulting decision was not a clear-cut victory for either side, but with Depp being awarded $10 million in compensatory damages in comparison to Heard being awarded $2 million, the jury made it clear who they thought was more in the wrong here. However, while Depp fans are treating yesterday’s verdict as a clear-cut victory for the star, the question becomes: What happens next, at least in terms of Depp’s career — the very thing he accused Heard of damaging? Steve Jones Doesn’t Like the Sex Pistols’ Music Anymore: “I’d Rather Listen to Steely Dan”

Sure, Steve Jones might be in the midst of promoting Pistol, the new FX series about his band, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has to like his own music. In two recent interviews, the Sex Pistols guitarist has admitted that his tastes have changed quite a bit since being a punk rocker in the ’80s; nowadays, he’d “rather listen to Steely Dan.” The topic first came up in an interview with The Telegraph last week. “I never really listen to the Pistols’ music anymore,” Jones admitted. “I’m fucking tired of it, to be honest with you. I’d rather listen to Steely Dan.” It might come as a shock that Jones would prefer a jazz-rock group over the genre he helped pioneer, but rest assured he meant what he said. Speaking with The Associated Press about the re-release of the Pistols’ hit...

The Rolling Stones Perform 1966’s ‘Out of Time’ for the First Time Live

The Rolling Stones kicked off their 60th anniversary tour (phew, not many bands can say that) last night, Wednesday, June 1, at Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano. To celebrate the big night, the legends rolled out their 1966 staple “Out of Time” for the first time at a show. [embedded content][embedded content] “Out of Time” is off the Stones’ 1966 Aftermath and was written by the Glimmer Twins. According to Rolling Stone, and aside from the actual performance, the track has technically only been heard live by fans waiting outside of venues during concert rehearsals. Also back in 1966, Mick Jagger produced a cover of the song for ’60s rock singer Chris Farlowe, where a pre-fame Jimmy Page even featured on guitar. Horsegirl Are the Chicago Post-Punk Trio Channeling the Power of Youth

The DIY scene in Chicago has always been strong, but Horsegirl – vocalists/guitarists Penelope Lowenstein and Nora Cheng, 18 and 19, and drummer Gigi Reece, 19 – didn’t feel like there was room for young people to be involved while they were growing up. “[We] weren’t getting heard or acknowledged, and we would not be able to play shows at any of the venues ‘cause we were underage,” says Reece. Together with their friends around the city, the trio created their own alternative youth world, where they share music, zines, art, and other creative passions with each other. “We’ve realized the people who do it best are us and our friends,” says Lowenstein. “We’re kids promoting kids’ work primarily, and we’re able to have a voice.” Last year, the band spent their final summer before Cheng and Re...

Jessica Boudreaux on Touring After Illness: “Cancer Made Me Realize I May Never Go Back”

In this new series, musicians open up about the issues that are important to them and their community. I spent my twenties on tour. And for the last few years, my band Summer Cannibals and I were consistently spending more time on the road than at home. Over the course of a decade I missed most of my nephews’ birthdays and trips with my family, my relationship was at a breaking point and my mental health was deteriorating due to a life-long anxiety disorder. But when you’re an artist there’s a narrative you’re sold: If you want this bad enough, you’ll do anything to get it. My band was always lucky to be offered great support slots with incredible musicians, but we never hit a groove with headlining. We never had the critical acclaim or the “buzz” we chased. But we believed we just needed ...
