The Mountain Goats have announced their forthcoming record, Bleed Out, which is due Aug. 19. The band just released the gleeful “Training Montage” video, where we see a funny montage that starts with the band throwing axes and skateboarding backstage. [embedded content][embedded content] Before performing onstage, they took comical clips of themselves running around venues and arenas and doing push-ups on benches, literally “training” for a big show, singing: “Everybody ready for justice / Just another mile to go / But the strings will keen and the horns will cry / When it’s just me against the sky.” Bleed Out will arrive via Merge Records, and is available for pre-order. Produced by Bully’s Alicia Bognanno, according to a release, the record is “a c...
Nikki Lane has been keeping busy the last few years with various music collaborations. For the first time in five years, Lane is slated to release what marks her fourth studio album, Denim & Diamonds, which is out Sept. 23. With the announcement, Lane just shared the video for it’s lead single, “First High.” [embedded content][embedded content] The Jocelyn Cooper-directed “First High” video takes us down Lane’s own memory lane, where she indulges in nostalgia for her rebellious upbringing. Lane cries of a youthful freedom of driving fast and smoking with punks: “Take me back to the first show / Right back to the first note / When I knew my heart was pure rock ‘n’ roll / I’m still searching for that first high.” “This song is about chasing that feeling of the first rollercoast...
2022 has already proven to be a year in which popular, newly-released singles are fewer and further between, especially when it comes to the Billboard Hot 100. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been plenty of incredible new songs to jam out to this year. That goes double for LGBTQ artists — even just halfway through the year, dozens of queer and trans stars have already released career-defining songs, with some even upending their entire public personas in favor of releasing something that is honest about their sexualities. Exceptionalism in queer art has also spanned genres; pop, R&B, rock, folk, and even some country has seen major singles by queer artists hit the market in 2022. So, to celebrate the work these artists put into their songs this year, check out Billboard’s...
Could there be a simpler way for the music industry to go green? While acts like Coldplay and Justin Bieber have been focused on bicycle-powered stadium shows and kinetic dancefloors, for her new album Big Time (out Friday on Jagjaguwar) Angel Olsen took a more straightforward approach that’s replicable for artists of all sizes. Each vinyl or CD copy of the album purchased from her label’s website has carbon offsets built into the pricing, meaning the environmental impact that went into producing — and will go into consuming — the vinyl album (for $1 each) or CD (50 cents each) is effectively neutralized. All the proceeds from these surcharges go to Native, a public benefit corporation specializing in carbon offsets, which will use the money to purchase carbon offsets supporting the Medfor...

Brandi Carlile is happy to expound upon bad wine. Bad wine gives her a hangover. The pretension of wine culture leaves a bad taste in her mouth. “Without sounding like I’m judging wine as a concept, it’s annoyingly bougie and culturally hetero,” she says with a laugh. “It’s like golf.” Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news So when it came to developing her own boutique wine label, XOBC, she knew what she did want. It would be a wine for folks who are “a little left of center.” Something a bit rugged — maybe for a camping trip, to be sipped out of a Solo cup — “but it’s not going to give you a f–king headache.” And like everything Carlile does, it wouldn’t just be good — it would do good, too. Because Carlile and her wife, Catherine Shepherd, ...
