Get a Chance to Get on With It Twice: The Return of Algernon Cadwallader

A decade of tireless advocacy from unofficial street teamers, emo “best of” lists, Twitter threads and worshipful bands shaped in the image of “Spit Fountain” has finally willed an Algernon Cadwallader reunion tour into existence. But it’s the intrepid and typically unsung YouTube cover artists that will ensure that these shows might actually happen. “I’m looking forward to announcing so I can ask people to show me how to play this stuff,” guitarist Joe Reinhart jokes. “Who’s got tabs?” Both Algernon Cadwallader and those lucky enough to witness them in their heyday remembers the band’s music the same way – a cracked, anthemic take on Cap’n Jazz and their Midwest emo progeny, distinguished by inventive instrumental technique that would’ve been hailed as wizardry had it not been played with...

Phoenix Get Weird On New Single ‘Alpha Zulu’

Phoenix offer up an enticing electro- and dance-tinged sound on their new single “Alpha Zulu,” which heralds the French group’s first new album since 2017’s Ti Amo. The track begins with chopped-up vocal samples before grooving to a hip-swinging beat that sounds very little like anything in Phoenix’s catalog to date. According to a press release, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars heard an airplane pilot repeating the titular phrase during a bumpy, storm-addled flight, and was inspired to write the song afterwards. Phoenix’s most recent new song was 2020’s “Identical,” which appeared in Mars’ wife’s Sofia Coppola’s film On the Rocks. For now, there’s no additional information about the new album, including whether “Alpha Zulu” will be included on it. Phoenix begins a short European tour tonight ...

Danny Boyle Brings Anarchy to TV

London in the late 1970s was trash. Literally. Every street was lined with bags of refuse. Flies buzzed around moldy garbage that often sat for weeks at a time. The haulers were on strike. Prime Minister James Callaghan ignored the trade unions’ demands for higher pay. When pressed by the media over the widespread strikes, Callaghan remarked, “I don’t think that other people in the world would share the view that there is mounting chaos.” What a dolt. Meanwhile, around the city, in the abandoned warehouses and the seedy pubs, a noise was amplifying. At first it sounded like a simple eclectic hum. A single frequency crawling out into the world, learning to feed itself. And it did. This noise evolved into something we call a C major chord. Growing, the noise slithered its way to an A minor c...

Reefer Madness: Laura Ingraham Attacks Marijuana Instead Of Focusing On Gun Violence

Source: Alex Wong / Getty  Laura Ingraham previously demonstrated an ability to use her platform irresponsibly and did so again during a broadcast. During a segment of her show, Ingraham attacked marijuana legalization and attempted to link the action to the recent uptick in gun violence. During a The Ingraham Angle segment on Tuesday (May 31), the host made the fumbling attempt to connect marijuana with the rash of mass shootings cropping up across America. Instead of using the time to delve into the haphazard laws and regulations surrounding gun control, Ingraham took a lower road. Speaking with Dr. Russell Kamer, the medical director of Partners in Safety, a group that fashions drug testing initiatives for employers, was framed to demonize all things cannabis. “Why aren’t people i...
