Ricky Gardiner, a guitarist for Iggy Pop and David Bowie, has died. Iggy Pop and producer Tony Visconti shared the news on social media on Monday (May 16), with the former writing, “Dearest Ricky, lovely, lovely man, shirtless in your coveralls, nicest guy who ever played guitar. Thanks for the memories and the songs, rest eternal in peace.” A cause of death was not disclosed, but Gardiner’s longtime friend Visconti noted that the guitarist had been living with Parkinson’s disease. Ricky Gardiner was 73 years old. Gardiner is best known for his close collaboration with Iggy Pop, with whom he co-wrote “The Passenger.” He recounted the song’s origins in a 2005 interview with The Independent, describing how he came up with the song’s famous melody in Berlin. “It was certainly a case of the ch...
Sun Ra House, the three-story Philadelphia building that has been a cradle for Sun Ra’s evolving Arkestra outfit since the 1960s, has been listed as a historic landmark in the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. The building at 5626 Morton Street, also known as the Arkestral Institute of Sun Ra, reportedly still houses a number of Arkestra members, including current bandleader Marshall Allen. Allen had lived in the house since 1968. In 2021, he reported that the building had partially collapsed. On May 13, the Philadelphia Historical Commission unanimously voted to grant the protected status, a representative for the register said. As a result of the designation, the Historical Commission will ensure any adjustments to the building meet historic preservation standards, as well as adv...
Stephen Andrew Walter, one of three men charged in connection with Mac Miller’s death from a drug overdose, was sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison on charges of fentanyl distribution, Rolling Stone reports and Walter’s attorney has confirmed. Walter had previously agreed to a 17-year sentence as part of a plea agreement last year, but U.S. District Judge Otis D. Wright II rejected the plea on the grounds that Walter continued to sell the oxycontin pills that caused Miller’s overdose even after his death. Walter’s attorney William S. Harris told Pitchfork that his client did not know Miller and learned of his death upon his own arrest, and did not know the pills he sold to his co-defendant Cameron James Pettit—which Pettit later sold to Miller—contained fentanyl, but does not pl...

Stephen Walter, one of the three men charged in the overdose death of Mac Miller, has received a 17.5-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal charges of distribution of fentanyl, reports Rolling Stone. The sentence came after US District Judge Otis D. Wright, II rejected a plea agreement that Walter struck with federal prosecutors in October 2021 for a flat 17-year sentence. Since prosecutors claimed Walter continued to sell cocaine and counterfeit oxycodone pills even after Miller’s untimely passing, Judge Wright said he couldn’t accept the deal’s terms. “The court has elected not to accept that plea agreement. So, sir, if you want, at this point, you can withdraw your guilty plea and go to trial,” Judge Wright said. “I may as well lay it out, okay. When you continue to enga...
After a white, 18-year-old gunman carried out a racist attack at a Buffalo, New York grocery store on May 14th, John Legend called for the de-platforming of Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson, whose prominent espousal of Great Replacement Theory the singer says “poisons the minds of millions.” Great Replacement Theory argues that people of color who immigrate to the United States are going to replace white Americans, and often blames Democrats for initiating immigration as a tool to enhance their voting base. The Buffalo shooter posted a 180-page manifesto to the anonymous message board 4chan repeating these views, as well as other white supremacist ideologies. He ended up killing 10 people and injuring three others in the attack, which he live streamed on Twitch. Almost all of the victim...

This week, the Puerto Rican superstar boasts four songs in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 — all in Spanish, marking the first time two or more all-Spanish-language songs have simultaneously ranked together on that chart. Billboard announced the news today (May 16), along with the revelation that seven of his songs from his latest album, Un Verano Sin Ti, are simultaneously charting on the Global 200. That album is also, naturally, currently sitting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. On the Hot 100, Bad Bunny’s highest-charting song, “Moscow Mule,” ranked No. 4. “Tití Me Preguntó” followed at No. 5, with “Después De La Playa” at No. 6. “Me Porto Bonito,” a collaboration with Chencho Corleone of Puerto Rican duo Plan B, charted...
