The Impact of EduTech in South Africa

COVID-19 has shone the spotlight on the importance of technology, especially within the realm of education. When schools around the country were forced to shut their doors, teachers and students needed to adapt to the prospect of continuing their learning online. While some thrived in these conditions, others struggled through. It became evident that not only is there a lack of practical resources available in South Africa’s less privileged communities, but also a lack of tech-related skills amongst South Africa’s youth. Ultimately, it is clear that the country has a way to go before overcoming many of the hurdles standing in the way of fully embracing the power of EduTech. However, the reality is that the use of technology in education, and all other aspects of daily life, is no longer op...

Olalekan Ponle, a Nigerian held in the United States for alleged multi-million-dollar fraud, has been indicted by the grand jury, a group of lawyers empowered to conduct legal proceedings and investigate potential criminal conduct. Ponle, popularly known as Woodberry, alongside Ramoni Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi, was arrested in the United Arab Emirate on June 10 for multiple fraud charges after a raid by operatives of the Dubai crime unit. According to the complaint, an unnamed Chicago company was defrauded into sending wire transfers totalling $15.2 million. Companies based in Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New York and California also were victims of the fraud, prosecutors say. Newsmen reported how the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) nabbed Ponle through details accessed from his What...

South Africa Super Rugby teams back in training on Monday

South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises will be allowed to start training next week, officials confirmed on Friday, a step closer to a return to the playing field after a frustrating four months. The game has been suspended in the country since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with South African Rugby having to sit idle as domestic competitions took flight in New Zealand and Australia. “This is an important first step back to playing, and we have taken it carefully to ensure full compliance and having thoroughly interrogated the regulations with government,” SA Rugby chief executive Jurie Roux said in a statement. “Contact training will not be permitted for the moment but the players will be allowed back onto the field with a rugby ball and back into the gym – while observing strict proto...

Everton looking to sign São Paulo goalkeeper Lucas Perri

Everton are thought to be keen on signing the Sao Paulo goalkeeper Lucas Perri this summer. As per Joven Pan, the Toffees have made contact with the Brazilian club. It will be interesting to see if they follow up on the enquiry with a formal offer now. Jordan Pickford has been quite error-prone since moving to Goodison Park and it is no surprise that Everton are looking at other keepers. Pickford is a talented player but he needs to work on cutting out his mistakes. Also, he needs more competition for the starting berth. Lucas Perri is highly rated in Brazil and he could push Pickford for the starting berth next season. The 19-year-old has played in England with Crystal Palace (loan) before and he might be tempted to join a big club like Everton. The player has a €40m release clause and th...

Though he’s yet to be caught on tape using the racial slur (Ronan Farrow where you at?!), his niece, Mary Trump has confirmed that she herself has heard her infamous uncle use the word along with anti-semitic slurs in private. Fixed Wireless Access Unlocks a World of Opportunity

5G networks are now being built out, with performance and capacity gains available to be tapped by new use cases. One of the first will be fixed wireless access (FWA). Around half of all households in the world – over 1 billion – do not have a fixed broadband connection. Given the current speed and capacity of cellular networks with LTE and its evolution to 5G, there are opportunities for operators to deliver broadband services to homes and small and medium-sized enterprises economically using FWA. Fixed wireless access (FWA) connections are forecast to grow threefold and reach close to 160 million by the end of 2025, accounting for 25 percent of total mobile network data traffic globally, according to Ericsson Mobility Report.
