August Vilella paints dreamlike scenes filled with imaginative creatures. His decade-long practice in contemporary art features serendipitous encounters, intuitive brushstrokes, and a seamless fusion of surrealism. His compositions are interlaced with diverse influences drawn from literature, music, and profound philosophical musings. From the surrealistic cues that permeate his works to the haunting echoes of his Heavy Metal roots, each brushstroke resonates with a symphony of visual elements. Venturing beyond the confines of Barcelona, August found solace amidst the enigmatic atmosphere of Tokyo. The Japanese capital also serves as both muse and canvas for August's explorations. At the core of August's practice lies an intuitive and automatic approach, reminiscent of the surrealist maste...
The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen museum in Germany is hosting a retrospective exhibition on the late American artist, Mike Kelley. Located in Düsseldorf, the show is presented in collaboration with the Tate Modern, Bourse de Commerce (Pinault Collection) and Stockholm's Moderna Museet. Entitled Ghost and Spirit, the exhibition chronicles an array of Kelley's works across sculpture, textile wall works and multi-media installations. The title is a reference to an unrealized performance that Kelley once made called Under a Sheet/Existance Problems (sic). In a past statement, the artist extrapolated on the work, stating: "A ghost is someone who has disappeared, but a spirit is a memory that remains, an energy that has lingering influence."From his somewhat eerie stuffed animal creations t...

Parisian photographer Karl Hab is currently showing his 24H PARIS exhibition in his hometown. Supported by Converse, the exhibit serves as an extension of Hab’s 2022 photo book with the same name.Through Hab’s “Snake Eyes” lens, he documents life in the City of Lights, a place where he grew up and still inhabits. Through the numberless pages, Hab imbues magic into the mundane, capturing and preserving fleeting moments that evoke the city’s distinct character. Just like the book, the exhibition showcases the images in chronological order based on the time of the day it was photographed. For the first time, the series of images from 24H PARIS are open for public view in an exhibition setting. Instead of the traditional gallery or museum, the images are framed and presented on the gates of th...
Ibrahim Mahama is a Ghanaian artist best known for creating intricate and sometimes massive textile installations that probe into how capital, labor and globalization are woven into the history of materials. In the past, he's covered Milan's Fondazione Nicola Trussardi with an exterior made entirely of jute sacks, a common vessel Mahama employs within his practice to comment on commerce and the transportation of global goods. His latest canvas? The brutalist concrete facade of London's Barbican Centre. Entitled Purple Hibiscus (2023-2024), Mahama worked with a group of 1,000 local weavers in Tamale, Ghana (where the artist is from) over a seven month period to reimagine the Barbican's Brutalist exterior. The towering pink installation coincides with the Barbican's ongoing exhibition, Unrav...
