Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa Announce New Festival in West Africa

Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa have announced the Black Star Line Festival, a new event scheduled for January 6, 2023 in Accra, Ghana’s Black Star Square. “Everything we’re doing is with the goal of uniting and building a bridge between black people of the diaspora and the globe, with the continent,” Mensa said in a statement. “And Ghana is the gateway to all of that.” The pair did not reveal a lineup as part of their announcement.

The festival draws its name from political activist Marcus Garvey’s short-lived but influential shipping company, founded with the intention of connecting Black people across the global economy. The Ghanian government has since adopted the name for their own fleet, and their flag, which features a black star.

Chance shared his video for “A Bar About a Bar” featuring Mensa and the Chicago-based painter Nikko Washington, in May. That was followed by his Joey Bada$$ collaboration “The Highs & the Lows.” His latest album The Big Day came out in 2019. Vic Mensa’s V TAPE dropped in 2020.
