Universal Pictures and visionary director Christopher Nolan have achieved another massive box office milestone with The Odyssey, which grossed $87 million USD across 3,943 North American theaters in its second weekend. The R-rated epic starring Matt Damon dropped just 30% from its $123.5 million USD debut, bringing its global total to $639.6 million USD.
The performance marks the second-biggest sophomore weekend for an R-rated feature in cinema history, trailing only Deadpool & Wolverine. As the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, The Odyssey has driven extraordinary demand for premium large formats, generating $140 million USD globally on IMAX screens alone—clearing $100 million USD in just 10 days. Universal invested $250 million USD in production and $125 million USD in promotion for the ambitious adaptation of Homer’s epic poem.
Elsewhere at the domestic box office, theatrical live-capture Hadestown: The Musical debuted with $9.6 million USD, while Pixar’s Toy Story 5 officially crossed $1.022 billion USD globally to become the highest-grossing film of the year.
