The Mahershala Ali-led Blade movie, first announced in July 2019 fresh off the success of Avengers: Endgame, has been officially scrapped following a series of high-profile setbacks. Ali recently shared diplomatic remarks about moving on from the vampire hunter role and making any future inquiries the studio’s problem. While the actor was under contract for years, the ongoing inability to begin production led him to focus on other projects. He now headlines the upcoming October action drama Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which is notably written and directed by one-time Blade filmmaker Bassam Tariq. Other former cast members have also secured new roles, with Mia Goth on The Odyssey and Aaron Pierre starring in Lanterns.
The abrupt cancellation extends beyond the primary cast, leaving stunt actors, costumers and editors without expected paychecks during a turbulent period for the entertainment industry. This ripple effect also threatens the standalone Blade video game announced in 2023 by Dishonored developer Arkane Lyon. Caught in the crossfire of extensive Xbox studio acquisitions and recent mass layoffs, the single-player title is in danger of being permanently shelved. The studio currently relies on a mandatory consultation process granted by French labor laws to stave off immediate closure, leaving the highly anticipated project on life support.
Scrapping the high-profile feature adds to a growing wave of industry criticism regarding Marvel‘s handling of Black-led projects throughout the Multiverse Saga. To fill the supernatural void in its schedule, the studio recently announced a Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling for 2028 alongside the confirmation of a third Black Panther hitting theaters that same year. Fans argue that relying heavily on Wakandan narratives while fumbling a culturally significant character like the Daywalker highlights a major misstep for the franchise.
Despite the cinematic drought, the Daywalker continues to exist in other media formats. The character features prominently in recent multiplayer titles like Marvel Rivals and the fighting game Marvel Tōkon, which arms the vampire hunter with a samurai sword. On the page, he also appears in current comic runs like Marc Spector: Moon Knight. For now, the character’s live-action future remains dormant, leaving Wesley Snipes’ original 1990s trilogy as the definitive onscreen iteration and proving that executing a modern reboot is surprisingly difficult.
