Michael Jackson Biopic 'Michael' Crosses $1 Billion USD Gross Globally

The Michael Jackson biopic has officially crossed $1 billion USD in global ticket sales

The film now stands as the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time after surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie features the pop icon’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in his official acting debut

Lionsgate is celebrating an unprecedented box office milestone as the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has officially crossed $1 billion USD in global ticket sales. The monumental theatrical run secures the film’s place in cinema history as the very first biographical picture to surpass the billion-dollar benchmark.

The film’s commercial success marks a historic milestone for Lionsgate, cementing it as the studio’s largest release and its first-ever title to cross the billion-dollar mark. The global box office breakdown includes $629.8 million USD from international markets alongside a strong $371.8 million USD domestic haul. Michael initially shattered records during its opening weekend, capturing $97 million USD domestically and $217 million USD globally to eclipse the opening record set by 2015’s Straight Outta Compton. It has since surpassed the $911 million USD lifetime gross of 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and supported by the Jackson family, the project chronicles the artist’s legendary journey from the Jackson 5 to his status as the King of Pop. The film features Michael’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his acting debut, alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson. The narrative provides an honest portrayal of the icon’s rise to superstardom, concluding the story in 1988 while bypassing the controversies of his later years.
