Acclaimed filmmaker Na Hong-jin and distributor NEON have officially debuted the chaotic first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller Hope. Serving as the director’s highly anticipated follow-up to his 2016 supernatural breakout The Wailing, the expansive creature feature marks a massive international scale shift for the South Korean auteur.
The narrative centers around the isolated village of Hope Harbor, where police chief Bum-seok and rookie officer Sung-ae are called to investigate a mysterious, destructive presence. As panic spreads across the community, a local hunting party ventures into the surrounding forests to track down the beast, only to find themselves aggressively hunted by an extraterrestrial force. The production leverages extensive motion capture and facial capture technology to bring its otherworldly threats to life.
Notably, real-life couple Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander portray imposing CGI aliens originating from a cosmic royal family, joining a star-studded cast that includes Taylor Russell and Squid Game breakout Hoyeon. Combining visceral action sequences with dark humor and cosmic horror elements, the visual aesthetic embraces classic ’90s blockbuster adrenaline while establishing a complex new sci-fi mythology.
