Simone Biles Withdraws From Olympic Individual All-Around Final

Simone Biles Withdraws From Olympic Individual All-Around Final

Simone Biles will not compete in her next 2021 Tokyo Olympics event, the individual all-around final, set to take place on Thursday, USA Gymnastics confirmed.

Biles on Tuesday withdrew from the team final to prioritize her mental health, and she will not participate in the all-around competition for the same reason.

“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health,” the USA Gymnastics statement read. “Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s event finals.”

Jade Carey, who finished ninth during Team USA qualifications, will replace Biles in the individual all-around event.

Following her withdrawal from the team event on Tuesday, Biles told NBC TODAY ‘s Hoda Kotb, “Physically, I feel good. I’m in shape. Emotionally, it varies on the time and moment. Coming to the Olympics and being head star isn’t an easy feat.”

Biles is still scheduled to compete in the finals for the vault and uneven bars on Sunday, August 1, floor on Monday, August 2, and beam on Tuesday, August 3.

Elsewhere at the Olympics, the Philippines has won its first-ever gold medal.
