Quentin Tarantino has been frank about finding inspiration for Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill from Michelle Yeoh’s performance in Jackie Chan’s 1992 comedy, Police Story 3. So why didn’t he cast Yeoh in his film? “I asked Quentin the same question,” Yeoh said in a new interview with Town & Country. “He’s very smart. He said, ‘Who would believe that Uma Thurman could kick your ass?’ ” While they’ve never worked together, Tarantino and Yeoh are friends, and she credits the director with convincing her to come out of retirement after her terrifying fall from a bridge on the set of 1996’s The Stunt Woman. She broke several vertebrae. “I thought I broke my back. I thought I was paralyzed,” she explained. Every breath was agony. Tarantino was in Hong ...
The Pitch: Perhaps you are a carbon-based life form with an Internet connection and/or cable TV subscription, and thus are aware of the existence of a little show called Game of Thrones, which for a few years there was pretty dang popular. Well, here’s some more of it! Specifically, here is House of the Dragon, HBO’s prequel/spinoff that does not involve Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but does hope to capture the imagination of an ever-fickle viewing public. To that end, we return to King’s Landing 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen (House of the Dragon is very specific on this point), where Daenerys’ ancestors still hold the very familiar-looking Iron Throne. Though we begin with the line of succession in flux, as a ruler without heirs has to make a choice...
Iceage have revealed that a new compilation album titled Shake the Feeling: Outtakes & Rarities 2015–2021 will arrive on September 23rd via Mexican Summer. The announcement comes along with a music video for the title track that showcases the Danish quintet’s raw and visceral live set. Over 12 tracks, Shake the Feeling offers a peek into the band’s vault during the era between 2014’s Plowing Into the Field of Love to last year’s Seek Shelter. The album features a bounty of unreleased material like an acoustic rendition of their early 2021 single “Shelter Song” and covers of Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It with Mine” and Abner Jay’s “My Mule.” The collection also hosts a few songs that won’t be entirely unfamiliar to fans, including the Beyondless outtake “All the Junk on the Outskirts,” whic...
Earlier this week, the Academy issued a formal apology to Sacheen Littlefeather for her treatment at the 1973 Oscars, where she declined Marlon Brando’s award for Best Actor. As president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee, Littlefeather endured racist mockery and threats of arrest and violence when she appeared on Brando’s behalf to protest the mistreatment of American Indians in the film industry. In a new interview published to the Academy’s website, Littlefeather detailed how John Wayne attempted to confront her in the aftermath of her speech. “[John Wayne] did not like what I was saying up at the podium,” Littlefeather recalled. “So, he came forth in a rage to physically assault and take me off the stage. And he had to be restrained by six security men in orde...

“When I was in Milan and had some free time, I got to enjoy drinking coffee at a café and took some walks around at nighttime,” recalls JAEHYUN, one of the members of SM Entertainment’s supergroup NCT. “I got so much inspiration from just being in those moments and in that space.” It’s this introspective energy that comes through on JAEHYUN’s new single, “Forever Only,” his debut solo release. NCT is one of the largest K-pop groups ever, and the largest working today (with a whopping 23 members!), operating on a relatively unique structure in which the group is split into different sub-units, showcasing various members in different combinations. JAEHYUN is a member of Seoul-based unit NCT 127, which features a total of ten members. It’s a lot of moving parts within the already demanding ro...
Brazilian pop star Anitta has enlisted the help of Missy Elliott for a groovy new single called “Lobby.” It’s out today, along with an equally funky accompanying music video. Few things are timeless as a luxury hotel, but on “Lobby,” Anitta and Elliott aren’t as concerned with the hotel as they are with what they plan to do inside the hotel. “Kiss me from the roof to the lobby/ Your lips on my body,” Anitta sings in the chorus, and hopefully, we don’t have to explain to you what that serves as a euphemism for. Elliott chimes in for the second verse: “Missy and Anitta, we rolling up to the party/ That hottie, he can get the keys to my Bugatti,” she raps, calling to mind visions of lavish parties that, for most of us, will just have to live inside our imaginations. Backed by a...
Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, is celebrating her 30th birthday today, August 18th. In an Instagram post reflecting on the milestone, Cobain opened up about how a mid-air incident during a 2017 flight led to a change in her perspective over the past several years. “I made it! Honestly, 20 year old Frances wasn’t sure that was going to happen,” Cobain wrote. “At the time, an intrinsic sense of deep self loathing dictated by insecurity, destructive coping mechanisms & more trauma than my body or brain knew how to handle, informed how I saw myself and the world; through a lens of resentment for being brought into a life that seemingly attracted so much chaos and the kind of pain tied to grief that felt inescapable.” She continued, “Then,...
It’s got groove, it’s got meaning, and it’s returning to the big screen: This weekend, Grease will play in 135 AMC Theatres locations in honor of the late Olivia Newton-John, with part of the proceeds going to breast cancer research. All tickets to the Grease showings cost $5, and $1 from each sale will be donated through AMC’s charitable fund AMC Cares. Newton-John — who famously played Sandy opposite John Travolta’s Danny in the 1978 classic, passed away on August 8th after a decades-long battle with the disease. Among the many tributes shared at the time of her death was an especially heartwarming post from Travolta, who shared, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we wil...
We wouldn’t dare be the ones to tell Kanye West if his Yeezy designs were trash, but it sure does look like he’s asking for it. Nonetheless, the rapper has defended the clothing display for his new Yeezy Gap line, wherein piles of ill-fitting neutrals were sheepishly tossed together in what appears to be literal garbage bags. Ye received a fair amount of backlash for the trash bag display — which he emphasized were actually construction bags — and was accused of mocking homeless people. Fittingly enough, he went on the air with Fox News to explain his thought process behind the display. “Look man, I’m an innovator, and I’m not here to sit up and apologize about my ideas,” Ye said from the Times Square Gap store, adding that his goal was to make fashion more accessible and informal. “T...
