Gru might not always make the best decisions, but at least he has pretty good taste in music. The original soundtrack for Minions: The Rise of Gru is out today, which — in addition to a few brand-new songs — comprises some of your favorite current musicians taking on some decades-old classics. Produced by Jack Antonoff, the Rise of Gru soundtrack includes Phoebe Bridgers taking on The Carpenters’ 1972 song “Goodbye to Love,” St. Vincent doing Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown,” Tierra Whack taking on Santana’s 1970 classic “Black Magic Woman,” Thundercat covering Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle,” and canonically Los Angelean transplants BROCKHAMPTON putting their own spin on Kool & The Gang’s “Hollywood Swinging.” Brittany Howard, Kali Uchis, C...
Cardi B is back with the new song “Hot Shit,” which features an assist from Kanye West and Lil Durk. Listen to the single below. The origins of the track actually date back several years, as Cardi told fans during a pre-release Q&A. “I think this record is actually older than ‘WAP,’” she explained. She described “Hot Shit” as “masculine” and “great for the clubs,” but due to behind the scenes issues it’s being released without a music video attached to it. Earlier this year, Cardi teamed up with Summer Walker and SZA for the Song of the Week “No Love,” and appeared alongside Kay Flock on the track “Shake It.” Apart from hip-hop, we recently learned that the rapper is a big My Chemical Romance fan, and outside of music, Cardi appeared as “Sharki B” in an episode of Baby Shar...
BTS’s second chapter is moving full steam ahead with j-hope kicking off his next era of solo work with new single “MORE.” Known for his sunny disposition and optimistic energy, j-hope subverted expectations when he started rolling out teasers for the single ahead of his first full-length solo album, Jack in the Box, due later this month on July 15th. Promising a darker tone from the rapper and dancer, promotional photos for “MORE” echoed j-hope’s recent statement describing the new sides of himself that longtime listeners might not be expecting: “If I was going to convey the things I wanted to say, I would have to be darker. It’s something I’ve never done before, so I was excited to try something new,” he explained. The first single is a major departure from the vibrant, rainbow-hued ...
Given their playful public image, it might seem like Two Shell crashed into the murky world of UK bass like a glitter bomb in a cement factory. But in reality, the mysterious London duo came in a Trojan horse made of unassuming stuff: brittle textures, stark tone colors, sternly syncopated beats. Their 2019 debut EP for Livity Sound fit neatly with the lean, percussive style of leftfield UK club music. Their anthemic tendencies earned comparisons to Overmono and Bicep, UK duos known for supersizing underground tropes for big-room crowds. And Two Shell’s edits—like “Wedding Practice,” which makes zero attempt to disguise a sizeable chunk lifted from Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You”—put them in a class alongside artists like Four Tet and Jamie xx, who wield canny bootlegs as floor-filling f...
Beck regrets turning down “Weird Al” Yankovic’s request to parody his out-of-nowhere Top 10 hit “Loser” back in the mid ’90s. In a preview of his upcoming Audible Original premiered by Billboard, Beck revealed that he was already afraid of not being taken seriously as an artist due to the reaction to his music. “‘Weird Al’ Yankovic tried to do a parody of it. It was going to be called ‘Schmoozer,’” he remembered. “I regret denying him permission to do it. I think it would have been an amazing video. I’m actually really sad it didn’t happen.” As Beck explained, he was at a crossroads in his career despite the breakout success of “Loser,” which unexpectedly took off when it started getting radio airplay. The hit led to his signing with a major label and launched a succes...
Mandy Moore has canceled the remainder of her 2022 North American tour. In a statement, the singer-songwriter cited her recent pregnancy announcement as the reason for canceling her tour, which was slated to run through the end of July. “Friends, It is with a heavy heart and much consideration that I have to let you all know that I am cancelling my remaining show dates in 2022,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “It has been an honor and an absolute dream to return to the stage again this past month, performing for all of you.” Moore continued, “When we booked these shows, I wasn’t pregnant and although I truly thought I could power through, the way we are traveling (long hours on the bus and not getting proper rest) has caught up, taken its toll, and made it feel too challenging to pro...
