Lorde’s “Solar Power Tour” brought her to London on Friday night (June 3rd), and along with cuts from her latest album, the New Zealand pop star shouted out Canadian artist Carly Rae Jepsen with a dramatic cover of Jepsen’s 2015 banger “Run Away with Me.” Performed as a prelude to Melodrama ballad “Writer in the Dark,” Lorde’s take on “Run Away with Me” transformed the upbeat single into a slow piano moment. Singing the track’s infamous saxophone riff, the audience joined Lorde in for a massive run through of the chorus before the artist seamlessly transitioned into “Writer in the Dark.” “Just felt like doing it,” Lorde said. “Thank you for indulging me.” Fortunately for the London crowd, Lorde seemed more open to audience singalongs last night than she has been in the past. “Will you...
Every Friday, Rap Song of the Week rounds up the hip-hop tracks you need to hear. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Denzel Curry recruits Key Glock for the remix to “Walkin.” On the surface, Key Glock wouldn’t be an obvious choice to appear on the remix to the world-weary “Walkin,” but Denzel Curry reached out to the Memphis rapper after being impressed by Glock’s perseverance following the loss of his best friend and mentor Young Dolph. Having dealt with the brutal death of his own brother, Curry is well-acquainted with the pain of processing tragedy. “I reached out to Glock because I felt like he’s the perfect example of ‘Walkin,’” Curry explained in a statement. “Based on everything he been through and also being independent, it hasn’t stopped his grind. I’ve ...
MUNA have paid tribute to Britney Spears with a cover of the pop princess’ 1999 classic “Sometimes.” Stream the track below. For their take, the queer trio reimagine the hit as a churning electro-tinged dreamscape. “Sometimes I run, sometimes I hide/ Sometimes I’m scared of you/ But all I really want is to hold you tight, treat you right/ Be with you day and night/ Baby, all I need is time,” Katie Gavin sings on the chorus before cutting out the schmaltz of the song’s bridge in favor of an extended instrumental break. The pop band’s cover of the ballad will be featured in Hulu’s upcoming gay rom-com Fire Island. Based loosely on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the film stars Joel Kim Booster (who also wrote the screenplay), Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, Ja...

Red Hot Chili Peppers are still fresh off the release of their latest album Unlimited Love, and there’s still plenty of love left to go around: Today, the Consequence cover stars have unveiled the song “Nerve Flip” on digital and streaming platforms, after first being released as a bonus track on the album in Japan only. Unlimited Love marked the Chili Peppers’ first album with fan-favorite guitarist John Frusciante since their 2006 double LP Stadium Arcadium. You can hear his spirit throughout the record, and even bonus tracks like “Nerve Flip” showcase why we missed him for so long. A Chili Peppers song through-and-though, “Nerve Flip” layers those chugging, arena-sized guitars with Anthony Kiedis’ often absurdist lyrics — what is “getting high on pink flami...

For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs make their triumphant return. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back with their first slice of new music in nine years: after signing to Secretly Canadian earlier this year, the NYC indie legends have returned with “Spitting Off the Edge of the World,” which features alt pop extraordinaire Perfume Genius. Though they’ve been gone for a large part of the last decade, their return does not come with the urgent, electrifying dance punk that characterized their previous two albums; instead, they appear to be ...
Tilian Pearson, the clean vocalist for post-hardcore act Dance Gavin Dance, has stepped away from the band after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced this week. The news comes less than two months after the sudden and tragic passing of Dance Gavin Dance bassist Tim Feerick. In April, a woman posted on Reddit that she was assaulted by Pearson around the time of Dance Gavin Dance’s Swanfest. The woman detailed multiple encounters that described an erratic and intoxicated Pearson slapping her across the face and having forcible sex with her. Pearson responded to the allegations on Reddit, saying, in part, “I take the subject of sexual assault seriously, and I want to firmly reiterate that there was no moment of anything happening that was not consensual.” But he also added, “My general s...
This week, in the aftermath of Stranger Things Season 4 debuting, English singer/songwriter Kate Bush experienced a remarkable renaissance, as her iconic 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” became a chart-busting hit across multiple streaming services. Over the course of Memorial Day weekend, the song reached the top 10 on Apple Music in 34 different countries, becoming one of the most-Shazamed songs of the week and getting permanently stuck in every viewer’s head — hopefully music supervisor Nora Felder is feeling pretty good about her accomplishment. If you watched the new episodes of the show, this isn’t a surprise: In the show, “Running Up That Hill” has a huge impact because it’s not just a casual needle drop — it saves a girl’s life. Max (Sadie Sink) is seen listening t...

Over 200 remastered episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head are heading to Paramount+, and unlike the titular heroes, the audience is set to score. Paramount has confirmed to Consequence that these updated old episodes will include the original music videos. Before they became big movie stars, Beavis and Butt-Head spent plenty of time on the couch watching music vids, saying awesome stuff like, “These dudes are pretty cool for a bunch of mimes,” of KISS, or wondering if Yanni is Beavis’ dad. This new brand of music criticism could be found on MTV from 1993 through 1997 (plus a one-season revival in 2011) and was reportedly improvised by creator Mike Judge, who voiced both characters. They belong with the show as much as T.P. belongs with a bunghole, so it’s grea...
