It has been three years since a new season of Stranger Things, Netflix’s blockbuster sci-fi adventure, graced our screens and we, along with the kids that the show revolves around, have grown a little older since July of 2019. We’ve learned new things, adopted new technologies, and learned more sinister things about people who propped themselves up as important leaders. (Perhaps we aren’t so different from the gang and their siblings, parents, and acquaintances.) With this in mind, it’s no wonder that the newest season of Stranger Things feels familiar but still thrilling — however, since it has still been nearly three years between seasons (the biggest gap the show has taken since it began in 2016) you might want a refresher into who these characters are, and where we will find them when ...
Is this the year Sky Ferreira finally releases her long-awaited sophomore album, Masochism? Only time will tell, but today fans can listen to “Don’t Forget,” her first new single in three years. Co-produced with Jorge Elbrecht, “Don’t Forget” is powered by a bombastic electropop beat filled with ’80s synths and booming percussion. Lyrically, Ferreira insists she isn’t a damsel in distress. “Honey, you can see that it’s a rotten world/ I don’t need you to save me,” she sings. “I don’t need to deceive you/ I am the real bad girl.” Ferreira first hinted at “Don’t Forget” two months ago, when the artist also seemed to reveal in her Instagram Story that the LP would be coming in April. Of course, that timeframe has since come and gone — just like the March release teased by Ferreira’s mother To...
There’s even more weirdness coming your way: “Weird Al” Yankovic has joined forces with Z2 Comics for a new graphic novel called The Illustrated Al: The Songs of “Weird Al” Yankovic. Written by Yankovic, the book will compile 20-plus illustrated interpretations of his songs. With an expected release coming in late November 2022, The Illustrated Al boasts a long list of contributors including artists Bill Plympton, Aaron Augenblick, Peter Bagge, Wes Hargis, Jeff McClelland, and more. It also comes complete with an introduction written by Yankovic’s longtime collaborator, comedian Emo Philips. “It’s such an incredible honor to see my song lyrics brought to life by some of my all-time favorite cartoonists and illustrators,” Yankovic writes in a press release. “I’ve actually bee...
Ricky Gervais evidently hasn’t learned any lessons from Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle about behaving himself onstage. Despite the backlash he’s received for the blatant transphobia in his new Netflix special SuperNature, the Office (UK) star defended his decision to crack jokes about “taboo subjects,” saying he thinks “that’s what comedy is for.” “I think that’s what comedy is for, really — to get us through stuff,” Gervais said during a recent appearance on BBC’s The One Show. “I deal in taboo subjects because I want to take the audience to a place it hasn’t been before, even for a split second. Most offense comes from when people mistake the subject of a joke with the actual target.” Following SuperNature‘s release, LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD took to Twitter to share their frustration...
Don McLean, the musician behind the 1971 hit “American Pie,” has resigned from performing at the National Rifle Association’s national convention this weekend, following Tuesday’s mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. “In light of the recent events in Texas, I have decided it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to perform for the NRA at their convention in Houston this week,” McLean said in a statement issued to TMZ. “I’m sure all the folks planning to attend this event are shocked and sickened by these events as well. After all, we are all Americans. I share the sorrow for this terrible, cruel loss with the rest of the nation.” McClean was one of several performers — including Lee Greenwood, Danielle Peck, and Larry Gatlin — scheduled to perform at the NRA conventi...
Mura Masa has announced his third album, demon time, out on September 16th via Polydor Records, while also unleashing the new single “blessing me” featuring Gambian-British breakout Pa Salieu and Jamaican rapper Skillibeng. While bringing the artists together, Mura Musa only had one goal in mind: pure, unbridled fun. “It’s devil on the shoulder type fun,” the 25-year-old musician explained in a statement. “Not necessarily the most wholesome, but it’s a really good time.” Advertisement Related Video demon time will be available on vinyl, CD, and cassette. Spotify suspended political ad sales in 2020 because the platform found it too hard to “validate and review” the deluge of misinformation they were facing. Well, the good news is that misinformation has been totally solved, because why else would Spotify now quietly reintroduce political ads in the run-up to the 2022 midterms? Money? Oh, right, money. As Protocol reports, the Big Green Circle is now asking US candidates, political parties, and even PACs to open their wallets. “Following our pause of political ads in early 2020, we have spent the past two years strengthening and enhancing our processes, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We are now beginning to sell select political advertisements in opted-in th...
Popstar-turned-daytime television ray of sunshine Kelly Clarkson regularly performs covers of songs new and old on her eponymous talk show. Now, she’s bringing KELLYOKE to tape with her new EP. The six-song covers project is out June 9th via Atlantic, and as a preview, Clarkson has shared her rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever.” Clarkson and her band have covered over 500 songs since The Kelly Clarkson Show premiered in 2019, and while the television performances have long charmed the internet, KELLYOKE offers new studio recordings of a few choice tracks, from Eilish’s 2021 single to a Radiohead classic to a song from Linda Ronstadt. The singer explained the origins of the EP in a statement, noting, “Music is in the DNA of everything I do, so when The Kelly Clar...
Over 1,000 musicians from 25 countries convened at Stade de France in Paris this past weekend for the latest staging of the Rockin’1000 concert. Initially launched as an elaborate plan to lure Foo Fighters to the small town of Cesena, Italy, Rockin’1000 has since evolved into a live celebration of rock music, in which hundreds of singers, guitarists, bassists, and drummers congregate in one single setting and rock the fuck out together. Due to the pandemic, Saturday marked the first staging of Rockin’1000 in nearly three years. With a crowd of 50,000 people looking on, the collective performed a 21-song set that included covers of The Who, Rage Against the Machine, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, and Guns N’ Roses. Notably, Rockin’1000 also paid tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor H...
