Our recurring Origins feature series offers exclusive insights into an artist’s latest release. Today, Lola Kirke breaks down her new single, “Lady for Sale.” Having starred in shows like Mozart in the Jungle and HBO Max’s Winning Time, multi-hyphenate Lola Kirke is already an established actress, but the Nashville-based singer is carving out a name for herself in the music world, too, by blending country music with ’80s pop influences. Ahead of tomorrow’s release of her sophomore album, Lady for Sale, via Third Man Records, Consequence is exclusively premiering the title track and its accompanying music video. With a visual treatment inspired by Jane Fonda’s Original Workout and filmed at The Parthenon in Nashville, “Lady for Sale” combines ’80s synths with twangy guitars and country-ting...

Justin Bieber’s whole life has conspired to make him not funny. He’s too handsome to need to compensate, and he became massively famous at exactly the wrong age, 14, when his peers were being bullied into developing personalities. He laughs at his own jokes like a real-life version of Mozart in Amadeus; the ridiculous laugh of someone who knows his admirers will join in. And so it’s no surprise that his new joke rap song, “I Feel Funny,” will leave you feeling anything but. The one-minute long track features Biebs whisper-rapping over a beat with a steady whump-whump-whump like a wallet slapping the sides of a dryer. The lyrics are as humorless as a comment section, and Bieber’s wit, such as it is, comes in the form of over-pronouncing words. “You entice me,” he says, snapping off the ‘t.’...
For a rapper who used to drop several projects per year, Future has considerably slowed down his output as of late, but the Atlanta native is returning this Friday, April 29th with a new album titled I Never Liked You. Spanning 16 tracks, it includes features from Kanye West (“Keep It Burnin”), Young Thug and Gunna (“For a Nut”), and a pair of appearances from Drake (“Wait for U” and “I’m on One”). Future’s Valentine’s Day single “Worst Day” does not appear on the tracklist. “I’m putting myself out there,” Future recently said about I Never Liked You in a GQ interview. “Sharing my lifestyle with the world. Sharing my pain with the world. Sharing my ups, sharing my downs with the entire universe...

“Head Splattered in Seven Ways,” to wit, details an absurdist armed standoff between two dudes. All the death-metal hallmarks are present—vocals so violent you can practically hear the larynx rip, massive riffs that crash down in waves, cymbals that dance over tides of blast beats. As Jones demands answers from his victim, he repeats, “Tell me the truth,” the band making space for a refrain so barbed you may hum along the second time he coughs it up, even if this is the only death metal song you’ve ever heard. Or there’s “Necrobionics,” the first of those two tunes about the mounting zombie army. The band is as agile as it is aggressive, with righteous guitarists Jared Welch and Kyle Beam stuffing a symphony of melodrama into their compact riffs. Jones perches above it all like some pop-st...

Twitter has acknowledged mass deactivations following Elon Musk’s purchase of the company. A representative for Twitter told NBC News that the trend was an “organic” occurrence among users. The drop-off has been most pronounced in large accounts. Barack Obama, the most-followed user on Twitter, shed more than 300,000 followers after Monday’s news. Katy Perry, Twitter’s third-most popular account, lost more than 200,000 followers. So are hundreds of thousands of people all singing “Bye, Bye, Birdie?” Not necessarily. To start, conservative accounts are experiencing a surge in new followers, mostly from freshly-created accounts. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene gained over 100,000 new follows, while far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro added 90,000 of his own. Advertisement Rela...
Our feature series Origins gives artists a platform to break down the influences of their newest release. Today, BoyWithUke explores everything that went into the yet-to-be-released album cut “Understand.” BoyWithUke, the masked singer-songwriter whose short, emotional songs have garnered a massive following on TikTok, is set to drop his newest single “Understand” on May 6th, the same day as his newest LP, Serotonin Dreams. Today (April 28th), he’s released a visual teaser for the song, a 46-second video titled “I TOOK A PHOTO EVERYDAY FOR 19 YEARS.” You can get an early look below. At this point, it almost seems redundant to describe up-and-coming musicians, regardless of genre, as former viral TikTokers. Labels have long-since clued into the platform’s potential as a self-vetting goldmin...
Olivia Wilde was served custody papers from her ex-fiancé, Jason Sudeikis, while presenting the trailer for her upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling at CinemaCon, Deadline reports. The actress/director was previewing her upcoming project, which stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, at the gathering of movie theater owners when an unidentified person approached the stage and slid her a manila envelope marked personal and confidential. “This is for me?” Wilde asked, according to Deadline. It was later confirmed by Deadline that the envelope contained legal documents. Update: According to a source close to Sudeikis, the documents were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the couple’s children. The source also said Sudeikis “had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the enve...
