From career milestones and new music releases to major announcements and more, Billboard editors highlight the latest news buzz in Latin music every week. Here’s what happened in the Latin music world this week. Maluma’s Social Work in Colombia At his successful “Medallo en el Mapa” concert this past weekend, where he had special guests Madonna and Grupo Firme, to name a few, Maluma (real name: Jose Luis Londoño) unveiled his next venture. The Colombian artist joined forces with La Haus for the “A Haus for Medallo City” initiative to build homes for low-income families in Antioquía. Kygo‘s “Freeze” is an ode to life’s unforgettable moments. Following the release of the spritely “Dancing Feet” alongside chart-topping dance-pop band DNCE, Kygo opts for a distinctly sentimental tone switch on his latest single, “Freeze.” The near 8-minute single opens with a modest piano melody, but this is merely just the humble beginning of a slow-burning sonic journey that’s thoroughly worth exploring. “Freeze” is rooted in the innate human desire to hit pause on life’s most impactful moments in real time. The production builds with dreamy, twinkling synth soundscapes before a driving, modular bassline whips the arrangement into a satisfying house chorus. The track’s cathartic moments feel markedly more cine...
Speculation around Calvin Harris‘ list of collaborators who will appear on the hotly anticipated Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 continues to grow after the superstar DJ teased new music with none other than the Doggfather himself. Harris and Snoop Dogg previously connected in the studio on the sultry summer single “Holiday,” which also featured John Legend and Migos’ Takeoff. The cut was released on Harris’ groundbreaking hip-hop and electronic crossover album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 in 2017. The teaser of their follow-up doesn’t reveal much as to what the track will ultimately sound like, but its introduction certainly has piqued our interest. In the brief clip, Snoop is heard setting the stage: “Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, I’d like to we...
Lights, camera, laundry. Alison Wonderland rinsed out a slew of filthy new tracks live from a vacant L.A. laundromat as her long-awaited album dropped this week. Giving audiences one of the first live previews of her brand new Loner LP, the Australian songstress performed in partnership with Brownies & Lemonade at a pop-up rave to remember. The private event went down in the Alvardo Laundromat in Los Angeles. But if a sonic cleanser is what you were after, this DJ set was anything but. Wonderland unleashed an onslaught of bass as the laundromat beamed to life in a flurry of lasers. The LED strips lining the venue’s equipment snaked along every corner of the aged interior, igniting the scene with sequences of polychromatic hues for a distinctly haunting feel. The washing machines ...
