Sony Invests $1B in Bandcamp and ‘Fortnite’ Owner Epic Games

Epic Games, the publisher of the popular video game Fortnite and creator of the Unreal Engine graphics software that is popular with Hollywood, has raised $2 billion in a new fundraising round from Sony Group Corp. and KIRKBI, the owner of the Lego toy and entertainment brand. Epic says it will use the cash infusion to work with its investors and “create new social entertainment exploring the connection between digital and physical worlds.” Yes, it’s about the metaverse. Sony and KIRKBI will each contribute $1 billion in the round, which values Epic at $31.5 billion. Epic last raised cash in May of last year at a $28.7 billion valuation. Harry Styles’ comeback is complete, as his new song “As It Was” (Columbia) blasts to No. 1 on the U.K. chart. “As It Was” flies to the top of the Official U.K. Singles Chart with 94,000 chart sales, the OCC reports, for the biggest opening week of any single so far this year. Chris Bailey, the founding singer and songwriter behind the pioneering Australian punk rock band the Saints, has died. The news was revealed in a statement on the Saints’ social media, noting that he died on Saturday, April 9. “Chris lived a life of poetry and music and stranded on a Saturday night,” it reads. Bailey was born in Belfast, and when he was young, his parents emigrated to Brisbane, Australia. He formed the Saints in the early 1970s with Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay. Following the release of the “(I’m) Stranded” single in 1976, the band’s debut album (I’m) Stranded arrived in 1977.
