Swedish hardcore veterans Refused have announced a new EP, The Malignant Fire. In advance of its November 20th release, the band has unleashed the single “Born on the Outs”. The Malignant Fire will arrive roughly a year after Refused’s most recent full-length album, War Music. The new five-song collection features four new tracks and one War Music cut (“Malfire”). “Born on the Outs” has a post-punk vibe, with singer Dennis Lyxzén delivering clean vocals to start before escalating to his raspy howl. It’s as infectious as it aggressive, even delving into a melodic Sisters of Mercy-like bridge around the 2:10 mark. Lyrically, “Born on the Outs” continues the progressivism and radicalism of the band’s 30-year career, as Lyxzén rails against hate crimes, fascism, and oppression throug...
The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” may be one of the best songs of 2020, but it’s the After Hours single “In Your Eyes” that’s extra sax-y — quite literally. Today, the R&B superstar has shared a new remix of “In Your Eyes” featuring the one and only saxophone legend Kenny G. The unlikely collaborators first debuted a version of this rework at last month’s TIME 100 event, where The Weeknd was honored as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020. While that live rendition saw Kenny G lend a silky instrumental outro, this official studio release of the remix features two additional solos from the jazz musician and Kanye West associate. We never would have guessed we’d be mentioning The Weeknd and Kenny G in the same breath — they each offer their own very different vision of “sexy mu...
LUH. Lost Under Heaven, aka LUH., have returned with a new song called “Alpha Omega”. After releasing their previous albums, 2016’s Spiritual Songs for Lovers to Sing and last year’s Love Hates What You Become, via Mute, LUH. have decided to go the independent route. “Alpha Omega” marks their first release under their new label/arts platform, LUH.international. The single was entirely funded via the band’s Patreon, where subscribers got an early listen a few days ago. Today, the heavy swirling lament has been released wide for all to hear. As LUH. detailed in a statement, “Alpha Omega” was born out of exploring existential questions during lockdown. “After reflecting on our rapturous moment, from the sensational and quickly suppressed alternative narratives (or ‘conspiracy’ theories) to th...
Following its initial digital premiere earlier this year, Nick Cave’s concert film Idiot Prayer will screen in select theaters across the world on November 5th. Recorded at London’s Alexandra Palace in June 2020 as the UK slowly emerged from lockdown, the solo piano performance was conceived as a reaction to the confinement and isolation of the preceding months.” The 22-song set included material ranging from early Bad Seeds and Grinderman through Cave’s most recent album, Ghosteen. He also premiered a previously unreleased song called “Euthanasia”, which is now being released as a standalone video. Watch below. Following the film’s theatrical screening, Cave will release a companion live album on November 20th. It’ll feature four unaired performances. Pre-orders are now ongoing. Mean...

Lana Del Rey has released a new song called “Let Me Love You Like a Woman”. It’s the first single from her upcoming album, Chemtrails Over the Country Club. Stream it below. On Thursday evening, the pop star teased the track in Instagram post alongside what appears to be the single artwork. It’s the first song we’ve heard from Chemtrails Over the Country Club despite Del Rey initially claiming that the full-length would be out on September 5th. She’s now targeting a release on either December 10th or January 7th. Modern country songwriter Sturgill Simpson has released his first-ever bluegrass album, Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 — The Butcher Shoppe Sessions. It’s streaming in full below via Apple Music or Spotify. His fifth studio effort to date, it sees Simpson reinterpreting his own music in the style of bluegrass. The jam-packed project consists of 20 tracks pulled from across his discography, including Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (2014) and A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (2016). The Grammy winner skipped reworking any music from 2019’s Sound & Fury, which makes sense given that it’s a more experimental record with harder rock and electronic influences. Luckily, there’s plenty of his classic disaffected country songs that lend themselves wonderfully to solo bluegrass sessions, like “Breakers Roar”...
Local Natives will return next week with a new EP titled Sour Lemon. Out through Loma Vista Recordings, it’s being teased today with the almost-title track “Lemon”, a collaboration with Sharon Van Etten. The upcoming EP comes a little over a year after Local Natives’ 2019 album, Violet Street. In a statement, the California indie rockers talked about how the effort’s four tracks materialized in their own time, and separate from a proper album cycle. “There’s something freeing about writing without the goal of an album in mind. It feels like waking up for class only to realize that it’s Saturday and you can sleep in as long as you want,” they remarked. “The songs on Sour Lemon each have their own long histories but they all finally decided to arrive at the same time. Rather than waitin...
Crank up “WAP” because Cardi B and Offset are officially back together again. The hip-hop power couple has made amends just four weeks after filing for divorce. Cardi initially cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for wanting to split up from her husband of three years. However, it appears their squabbles may have just been part of a rough patch in their relationship. “I’m just a crazy bitch,” Cardi admitted in a new video, as TMZ reports. “One day I’m happy, the next day I want to beat him [Offset] the fuck up.” But at the end of the day, the pair’s tight friendship and even hotter sex life make all the drama worth it. “It’s really hard not to talk to your best friend,” the “Money” rapper continued, “and it’s really hard to have no dick.” Editors’ Picks “We’re just ...
HBO has been tight-lipped about whether their recent adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider would be coming back for a Season 2. Well, the loquacious King shares no such compunctions, and in a recent interview with EW he confirmed that “there’s going to be a second season of The Outsider as soon as they can get the production going.” The news came in a conversation about King’s beloved character Holly Gibney. She leads one of the novellas that make up the new collection If It Bleeds, and plays a big part in both The Outsider as well as the TV adaptation of Mr. Mercedes, which just migrated from the defunct Audience Network to Peacock. King was excited about Holly’s arc on The Outsider, though he didn’t think it would lead into the e...
The evolution of Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 song “Hurt” could warrant an entire oral history. As a slow-burning album closer that later became a staple of Johnny Cash’s repertoire, the song is a piece of music history with plenty of backstory — and now, Trent Reznor will finally explain how “Hurt” came to be for an upcoming episode of Song Exploder, the hit podcast-turned-TV series on Netflix. Earlier today, Netflix announced that Season 2 of Song Exploder will premiere worldwide on December 15th. The Killers, Dua Lipa, and Natalia Lafourcade are a few of the artists scheduled to appear in the next volume. It’s the inclusion of Reznor discussing “Hurt”, though, that feels like the biggest score of all for both fans and Hrishikesh Hirway, the host and executive producer of the show. “I first int...
