Billie Eilish is closing out the month with a special summer treat for her fans. Our 2018 Rookie of the Year has announced that she will release a new single called “my future” next week on July 31st. The track marks her first new music since “No Time to Die”, her James Bond theme song from February, which somehow feels like a lifetime ago. It also follows her 2019 offering “everything i wanted”. It’s unclear whether “my future” is a standalone release or taken from a larger project. We haven’t heard much in the way of a new record, the follow-up to debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, but it’s not as though the 18-year-old pop star has been idle. She and her father recently launched their own radio show on Apple Music, and Eilish performed a quarantine-style concert ...
On Friday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany claimed that the animated children’s show Paw Patrol has been put down, an unfortunate victim of liberal cancel culture run amok. For some small children, this would indeed be ruff rough news, but luckily for them, it’s a lie. The Nickelodeon show is about an elite group of search-and-rescue canines, and like the Village People, each pup has a different job. One works in construction zones, one is a firefighter, one specializes in underwater rescues, and yes, a lone German Shepard works as a police K-9. After George Floyd was brutally murdered by cops, some (mostly joking) Twitter users called for Paw Patrol to turn in its badge. This led to a relatively nuanced piece in the New York Times called “The Protests...

Finally, an acting role for Tom Hanks that’s truly one-of-a-kind: voicing a “virtual” concessions vendor for the Oakland A’s during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The MLB season has officially begun and that means baseball teams are going head-to-head like normal. However, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, stadiums are not allowing fans to attend games in person. Playing a game without the ambient noise of a crowd is eerie and, at times, difficult for the players, so MLB organizers have been playing pre-recorded crowd chatter from older games through baseball park speakers during games. And now, the king of summer blockbusters will be one of the voices mixed in with the crowd. Every baseball team in the US has been using pre-recorded crowd audio at their games, but only the Oakland A’s...
For those not already familiar with Coel’s work, the 32-year-old had her breakout moment in 2014 with her one-woman show, Chewing Gum Dreams, which debuted at the National Theatre in London. Following rave reviews of the play, Netflix approached Coel to adapt it into a series, which ended up ushering her character, teenage Tracey Gordon, onto screens and into hearts around the world in 2016. Devastatingly, it was while writing season two of Chewing Gum that Coel experienced the assault that led to the creation of I May Destroy You. While both series share similarities—the exploration of friendship, sexuality, and Coel’s creative genius, of course—the emotional takeaways for viewers are profoundly different: Chewing Gum made me laugh so hard I cried; I May Destroy You ma...
San Francisco punk band Culture Abuse have broken up in light of singer David Kelling admitting to sexual misconduct with an underaged girl. In a statement on Instagram, the other members of Culture Abuse emphasized that “the victim is our first priority.” Before sharing the anonymous individual’s full account of Kelling’s actions, with her consent, the band noted, “However we do not want [our breakup] to be the focus of this story, as survivors come forward, we commend their bravery and absolutely need to respect and listen to them. We are well aware that this does not fix the pain caused but we are hoping it’s a first step. There are no excuses for this behavior and it cannot be allowed.” They went on to say they would disassociate from Kelling, but urged him to “seek therapy to unlearn ...
Next week, jazz drummer and producer Makaya McCraven will release a new album called Universal Beings E&F Sides. A companion piece to his widely acclaimed Universal Beings record from 2018, this upcoming collection features 14 “new pieces of organic beat music” that were cut from those original studio sessions. Earlier this month brought lead single “Mak Attack”, which saw McCraven adroitly “attacking” his kit like the percussion virtuoso that he is. Today, the Chicago native returns with another rattling offering in “Beat Science”. As indicated by its title, here he experiments with a range of thumps and thuds, some wispy and casual, others pointed and moving at breakneck speed. To coincide with the new song, McCraven is also sharing “Do It Live”, another video installment from his on...
Last time we spoke to Jenny Lewis about Rilo Kiley’s 20th anniversary, she seemed a bit shocked at how much time had passed. Now, we’re feeling the same way. That’s because today, the beloved emo-goes-indie pop group have announced they’re reissuing Rilo Kiley, their self-titled debut album from 1999, on October 2nd via Little Record Company. Rilo Kiley originally formed back in 1998 in Los Angeles as a four piece featuring Lewis, Blake Sennett, Pierre de Reeder, and Dave Rock. After writing a handful of original songs and rehearsing regularly, they booked their first show at the Silverlake venue Spaceland. As it turns out, comedian Dave Foley was in the crowd that night and fell head over heels for their music — so much so that he wound up funding the band’s very first demo session and, i...
The deeper we get into the From the Basement archive, the better and better it gets. The latest uploads include full performances from Sonic Youth and PJ Harvey. Ever since it was announced that Nigel Godrich’s independent music performance program was uploading its entire archive to YouTube, music fans have been blessed with high-quality footage of iconic bands every week, including legendary Radiohead clips and previously hard-to-view performances. These new videos continue that trend. Sonic Youth’s 2007 performance on From the Basement feels like an actual concert. Although the setlist only consists of five songs, the runtime lasts well over half an hour and the band is totally in the zone. After they open with an impassioned version of “The Sprawl”, Sonic Youth then bust out a par...

A new music video for the track “cardigan” has also been revealed. folklore serves as Swift’s eighth full-length overall and comes less than a year after Lover. Its 16 tracks were co-produced by Aaron Dessner of indie rock outfit The National. His bandmate and brother Bryce Dessner provided “beautiful orchestration on several songs from across the ocean,” while Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Lover collaborator Jack Antonoff, and William Bower also contributed in various capacities. In a statement, Swift said that “Most of the things I had planned this summe...
Tame Impala have shared a remix of 070 Shake’s “Guilty Conscience”. Take a listen below. The track comes from our former Artist of the Month’s January debut, Mondus Vivendi, and is one of of our favorite songs of the year so far. The original single walks a bridge from alternative hip-hop to ’80s synthpop, a shimmering and hauntingly original that’s distinctly 070 Shake. The remix, however, is distinctly Kevin Parker. With a psychedelic spin, “Guilty Conscience” is suddenly a few vocal octaves away from a Currents cut. After touring behind Mondus Vivendi, 070 Shake has been taking quarantine easy. However, she recently announced on Instagram that it was “time to go make an album,” so it appears she’s ready to start on a follow-up. Editors’ Picks Tame Imp...
