Depending on which day you read this, there are currently around 17 days until spring officially starts, but we’re already beginning to see its effects. Sure, it’s still pretty cold out, but even the chilliest regions (where I live being one of them) are witnessing other signifiers that spring is indeed on the way; lighter and longer days. While I ordinarily love the winter months—bundling up and heading out for a steaming hot chocolate is one of my favourite pastimes—this year I find myself willing springtime to come. And what better way to prepare for its arrival than by thinking ahead to all the spring jackets I’ll get to wear. Making the switch from coats to jackets feels transformative; there’s something so hopeful about being able to step outside in ...
French designer Marine Serre deserves every ounce of praise for her commitment to slow fashion. The brand that lists Beyoncé and Adele as fans focused on upcycling and reconnecting with family for its autumn/winter 2021 CORE collection. “This last year has been difficult for everyone,” said Marine Serre, “but there is no longer any question about it, things must be done differently. We want to bring Ecofuturism to the streets.” Marine Serre regenerated fabrics and recycled yarns for three years before creating the new collection. The brand upcycled fleece bedcovers, leather, denim, moire, silk and tartan scarves, T-shirts, carpets, pullovers, household linen, and workwear to create an incredibly contemporary and eco-conscious edit for your entire family. Marine Serr...
Popular German shoe brand Birkenstock launched its limited-edition shoe collection with Central Saint Martins students. The collection includes four rare Birkenstock sandals designed by four students from CSM’s MA Fashion course, and one archival Birkenstock style re-released by the brand for the first time. In 2018, Central Saint Martins and Birkenstock collaborated on a two-year project with the BA Fashion History & Theory and MA Fashion courses to expand the brand’s archive and create four new Birkenstock styles. Ten finalists from the MA Fashion course were selected by a panel of 12 industry experts — including Sarah Mower and CSM alumni Mary Katrantzou and Roksanda Ilinčić — to work on the Birkenstock x Central Saint Martins collection, of which four student designs qu...
We’ve still got a few cold months to go, and Zara has just made seeing out the next few months feel like a fun sartorial challenge rather than a slow crawl to the warmer temperatures of spring. As with many other affordable brands, the ’90s are still reigning supreme right now across just about every product category. Instead of trudging up long-buried, cringe-worthy outfit flashbacks from our youth, Zara’s taken the best of the decade and turned it into a very chic 2021 capsule. The colour palette remains mostly muted, and the silhouettes are simple. Still, these pieces are anything but boring. So keep scrolling to see the best Zara buys, and shop them before they inevitably sell out. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Onlin...
When it comes to shopping, I tend to invest in great basics and pieces that I plan on having in my wardrobe for years ahead. In my closet, you’re bound to find items that I can wear on repeat with any number of outfits. It’s an approach to shopping that can be summed up as “buy less and smarter”. Each piece I add to my wardrobe is very intentional and I consider the cost-per-wear of each item when making a new purchase. It’s something that has always been a part of the way I shop. In fact, my first big fashion purchase ever was a nylon Prada messenger bag that I bought in high school and still wear on the regular to this day. As I think about my 2021 shopping, I have my “buy less but smarter” mindset in place and have narrowed in on some key fashion items for the season ahea...
There’s a little trick that I think a lot of people are unaware of: If you’re smart when shopping on the high street, pretty much any piece can look designer. There are, of course, a few rules. Monochromatic outfits are a great way to look chic, but it’s always wise to check out the fabric and patterns. (Cashmere mix is a good example, as is croc effect.) Overall, you want to go for something simpler and less fussy. Right now, there are so many incredible pieces on the high street that fit this criterion. I’ve found 30 items that look two, three and even four times as expensive as their price. Keep scrolling to see my edit of the most expensive-looking high-street pieces right now. Here at Who What Wear UK, we’re all about delivering the latest and greatest shopping edits, as approved by our team. That’s why we’ve created The Joy of Shopping, a shopping column which will see me, Joy Montgomery, discussing the brands, buys, and ideas that are preoccupying my mind this month—think homewares, outerwear, and everything in-between. Is there something you’d like me to cover? Make sure to tweet or Instagram me your requests! How do you create original personal style? It’s a somewhat loaded question that fashion-lovers have grappled with for centuries. Just like ‘good taste’, originality can feel like an illusive, ever-moving target that changes...
There used to be a time when all the new season items would arrive on the high street in the same week, if not within days of each other, however now the new-in sections are steadily updated and so are less defined by seasons. This means you might not have noticed that this week is when we have seen the real shift towards spring, with many of the complete spring collections now available to buy. This has been a focus for us on Who What Wear over the past seven days, as our editors have been sorting through the thousands of products to bring you concise edits of the best of the best items on the high street right now. Our editors might be able to spot a cult high street buy a mile off, but we also like to crowdsource and see what other people are loving. So for this piece we have ...

You know when a fashion trend manages to span more than a decade that it’s something to take note of. But 60 years? That really is on another other level. Coco Chanel created the first iteration of her iconic boucle jacket back in the 1950s; inspired by menswear tailoring, it featured the signature contrasting trim, boxy fit and logo buttons, and to this day it remains a firm favourite in the fashion hall of fame. Whether it’s renting, upcycling, shopping secondhand or buying from conscious companies, these days there is a myriad of ways we can all become more sustainably minded-consumers. However, with so much information and so many ethically-conscious brands around, often it can be hard to know where to begin. A simple Google search for sustainable fashion brands yields about 255 million results, and while that is in no way a negative thing, it can all feel a little mind-boggling at times. But, don’t worry—that’s where we come in. If we were to examine brands that are more considered in terms of their fabrications, manufacturing process and supply chain, at times the word ‘sustainable’ can also equate to ‘expensive.’ That is...
There’s no doubt that leggings have been quite the wardrobe saviour over the past year. Along with joggers, these trousers with stretchy waistbands have allowed us to work from home in as much comfort as possible. But with news of lockdown restrictions easing soon, you, like me, might be feeling a little apprehensive about giving up the delightful easiness of these soft trousers. True, leggings might once have just been associated with slobbing around the house or doing exercise, but these days, they can be much more than that. In fact, there’s a super-easy way to ensure these humble jersey trousers can be elevated to a fashion statement. According to plenty of influencers, the coolest way to wear your leggings in 2021 is to add an oversize blazer. Whether you’...
