Fans have been patiently, (or, let’s face it, impatiently), awaiting the release of the new series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power since Amazon bought the TV rights to the franchise for $250 million back in 2017. In the past couple of months, we’ve finally been rewarded for our patience with a couple of promotional breadcrumbs, like a highly-anticipated Super Bowl trailer, as well as first looks at the characters via Vanity Fair. The show, which is coming to Prime on September 2, 2022, is set thousands of years before The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings in Middle-earth’s Second Age, and promises to fabricate a fantastical backstory to the franchise we know and love. With that comes a cast of brand new characters, as well as some of our favorite familiar faces. Here’s your definitive,...
We have all sorts of different kinds of conversations about movies these days. As critics, we talk about a film’s quality as well as its place in cinema history, its technological achievements, and its impact on the cultural landscape. As fans, we talk about how a film made us feel, how it changed the way we personally look at the world around us. But with our friends and loved ones, especially those who haven’t seen most or any of this year’s nominees, they might have one key question as we urge them to check out our favorite films: How big of a bummer are they? It’s certainly the question that many people would like to have answered when sitting down with an unknown quantity like Drive My Car or CODA. Hence, this hopefully helpful guide, with all 10 Best Picture nominees ranked from leas...
Image by Darwin Laganzon, Pixabay. Cybersecurity involves the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems, networks, programmes, and data from cyber-attacks. Many establishments across the world, including, schools, banks, and hospitals rely heavily on cybersecurity services to protect their data and be safe from cyber-attacks. Everyone who has a computer or access to the internet must at some point know how to protect themselves online, hence the crash course in cybersecurity in your high school, college, or university years. It is not at all inane. In 2019, a cybersecurity company, Kaspersky noted that malware attacks in South Africa had increased by 22 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the first quarter of 2018, which translates to just unde...
Internet and connectivity speed tester Ookla has released its market analysis for South Africa, ranking the country’s fastest mobile internet operators. The analysis only takes into account top mobile operators in the country, ones which account for 3% or more of total test samples in the market in Q4 2021 – smaller providers are not tested, and thus are not included in the rankings. All operators are ranked based on their Speed Score, which incorporates a measure of each provider’s download and upload speed to rank network performance (90% of the final Speed Score is attributed to download speed and the remaining 10% to upload speed because online experiences are typically more affected by download speed). Ookla places the most emphasis on the median speeds as those represent what most mo...
Foo Fighters Week continues here at Consequence with a list of Dave Grohl’s best turns on the kit. Keep it locked here throughout the week for more interviews, lists, editorials, and videos — it’s all things Foos, all the time. You can see everything in one convenient place here. In most cases, drummers are the unsung heroes of rock and roll — besides keeping time, drummers can lift a track off its feet, aid heavily in the composition of songs, and add a component to music that’s both physical and visceral. Then you get Dave Grohl, the frontman of Foo Fighters and drummer of Nirvana, Scream, Tenacious D, Them Crooked Vultures, and often, Queens of the Stone Age. There may not even be a drummer more prolific than Dave Grohl considering the sheer magnitude of projects he’s participated in, a...

Mark Lanegan possessed one of the most imitable voices in rock history. Defined by his deep baritone and reflective lyrics, Lanegan would rise from humble origins in the small town of Ellensburg, Washington, to mainstream prominence as the frontman of Screaming Trees — best known for the hit “Nearly Lost You.” From there, Lanegan would embark on a prolific solo career and numerous collaborations: a notable five-album stint with Queens of the Stone Age, an Americana project with Belle and Sebastian’s Isobel Campbell, and the one-off Gutter Twins LP with Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs, among others. The sheer diversity of Lanegan’s output was a testament to his gifts as a singer and songwriter. Lanegan’s life was not an easy one — as he himself revealed through the harrowing accounts in his auto...
One of the greatest challenges for any musical artist is crafting a compelling theme. But there’s a whole new level of difficulty to be found in the realm of theme songs for children’s shows, given that kids are the toughest customers on the planet, and finding a way to adapt one’s unique musical sensibility to a well-established formula is one of those tasks that sounds a lot easier than it really is. With the premiere of the 25th (and final!) season of long-running PBS series Arthur today (February 21st), Consequence decided to unleash its inner child by looking back at the many, many times a great animated kids series got some musical help from a well-known artist, starting from the 1990s. This list includes, as a result, a remarkably eclectic collection of artists with one thing in com...

Balancing “Social” and Security Social media can increase brand awareness and engagement with the public. It allows for a generally less-expensi...
Neil Percival Young grew up in Winnipeg, but he moved to America in the ‘60s to become the greatest rock star Canada has ever produced. For over 50 years, he’s remained restlessly creative and committed to his political ideals, an influential guitarist as adept at heartbreaking ballads as fiery protest songs. While other classic rockers have slowed down their output, Young has remained ever-prolific, releasing nine albums in just the last decade. Neil Young’s latest album, Barn, with longtime backing band Crazy Horse, was released in December. But in recent weeks he’s been in the news more for taking a stand against Spotify, removing his music from the streaming service over its backing of controversial podcaster Joe Rogan. Fortunately, there are still a lot of ways to enjoy the song...
While emo music might be most associated with sadness and heartbreak, those lovelorn artists couldn’t have written such songs without experiencing some serious romantic highs. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we wanted to focus on the good parts of love more than the bad — although there’s still some unhappiness and resentment mixed in. (I mean, it is still emo after all.) SPIN’s writers spanned decades, waves and numerous albums looking for the top emo love songs, and now we’ve gathered them all here to save you the work. And yes, we know “emo” is just as broad a term as “love song” — you may also describe some of these acts as pop-punk or post-hardcore or even heart-on-sleeve indie-rock. But all of these bangers branch off the same family tree. From trailblazers like The Get Up Kids...
