Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris recently discussed Eminem‘s induction into the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, stating that the rapper’s music emits the same feeling as music from metal artists. Speaking to Audacy, Harris explained that they were “thrilled” to have Em be inducted in his first year of eligibility. “For a lot of years people asked about hip-hop. He’s the 10th artist to be sort of categorized that way. But you listen to his music, it is as hard hitting and straight ahead as any metal song,” he said. “Like, it’s right there. It really is. It’s a chest punch with a message and with a power and with a rhythm and with a bang, so we’re thrilled he’s going in his first year of eligibility. It’s a big statement.” The CEO added that the rapper is a good friend of the Rock Hall’s and has h...

One of the most significant byproducts of the streaming era has been the increasing number of ways that artists can make money outside the traditional record label system. But there’s often less attention paid to the actual ramifications of artists choosing to go that route — and the roles that distributors, managers, digital marketers and others play in filling that gap while using the data offered by digital service providers to help an artist succeed in whichever way they choose. That was the topic of the panel “Navigating New Strategies: How A&R, Artist Marketing & Distribution Come Together in the Age of Streaming” at the Music Biz 2022 conference on Monday (May 9). Moderated by Label Logic co-founder, digital strategy Jay Gilbert, the panelists — Rareform co-founder Hallie An...

Michelle de Swarte isn’t a mother, and she doesn’t play one on TV either. Instead, in the HBO horror-comedy series The Baby, she plays Natasha, a woman whose happily child-free existence gets complicated when a mysterious infant literally lands in her arms. That’d be enough for anyone to handle, but things get even more complicated when Natasha realizes that the baby might be, well, evil. Certainly people keep dying when he’s around. It’s a whole thing. De Swarte didn’t have much acting experience prior to the series — as she tells Consequence, she booked the job thanks to her work as a stand-up. “I speak about myself, my past experiences, and how it informs the decisions that I make now ultimately,” she says of her typical set. “I speak about therapy, living in the States — as I lived out...
