The visual is directed by Maegan Houang, who previously co-directed the video for “The Only Heartbreaker.” Laurel Hell is out now on Dead Oceans. Watch the video for “Stay Soft” below. Houang said in a statement: “This video is heavily inspired by Romanticism and paintings and artwork from the Victorian era. Like the lyrics of the song ‘Stay Soft,’ paintings from that era have a gentle quality, but they still evoke a certain feeling of unexplored darkness and danger. I want the audience to feel safe within this fabricated world and then realize that the character Mitski plays is being hunted.” Mitski will be opening for Harry Styles at upcoming European dates. She is also headlining her own tour lat...

Mitski Returns From Lengthy Hiatus With ‘Laurel Hell’

After four long years, Mitski is finally back with her brand new album Laurel Hell. The 11-track record clocks in just a little over half an hour and marks her first full-length effort since 2018’s Be the Cowboy. A bulk of the material hears Mitski address her own problems with her career in music — which she opted to leave behind a few years ago — and how she has wrestled with this industry and its demands from her. Fans don’t really get a conclusion from the 31-year-old artist, meaning they will have to wait and see if a followup will ever come to fruition. “I felt it was shaving away my soul little by little,” Mitski told Rolling Stone of Be the Cowboy’s success. “The music industry is this supersaturated version of consumerism. You are the product being consumed, bought, and sold. Even...

Panda Bear on Animal Collective’s Unceasing “River of Creation,” Eleven Albums In

It’s been nearly six years since Animal Collective released Painting With, their tenth studio album — but according to Noah Lennox (AKA Panda Bear), the time flew by. Each member of AnCo is immensely collaborative, constantly working on projects either in a solo capacity or with other members of the band. And now, on Friday (February 4th), Animal Collective are gearing up to release the gorgeous, captivating Time Skiffs. It’s their eleventh (!) studio album, and one of their finest to date. Time Skiffs was initially hyped to be something akin to 2007’s Strawberry Jam (which turns 15 years old this year), but upon listening, there’s an ease with which Animal Collective can pull off the most complicated and intricate patterns. On the album are meditations on growing older and parenthood...

Spotify CEO Defends Handling of Joe Rogan COVID Controversy

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek defended how the streaming service has chosen to handle the scandal swirling around Joe Rogan and his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, which is hosted exclusively on the platform. “I think the important part here is that we don’t change our policies based on one creator nor do we change it based on any media cycle, or calls from anyone else,” Ek said during an earnings call on Wednesday, according to reporting by the New York Times. “Our policies have been carefully written with the input from numbers of internal and external experts in this space. And I do believe they’re right for our platform. And while Joe has a massive audience — he is actually the number one podcast in more than 90 markets — he also has to abide by those policies.” The fact that Rogan’s po...
