Every month, Billboard Latin editors will feature a small group of new, or relatively unknown artists, whose music we love. Think “diamantes en bruto” or “diamonds in the rough.” These are newcomers who have yet to impact the mainstream — but whose music excites us, and who we believe our readers should make a point to discover. In honor of Black History Month, our inaugural “On The Radar Latin” list includes five Afro-Latino rising stars you should be listening to. See our recommendations below: Artist: AkimCountry: Panama Why They Should Be on Your Radar: It was at an intimate listening session last year where I first discovered Akim’s music, and his potential to possibly become the next breakout artist deriving from Panama. Akim has been bubbling under for a couple of years now, but it ...
For our Track by Track feature, artists open up about the stories behind each song on their latest album. Today, Erin Rae takes us track by track through her new album, Lighten Up. After releasing her debut effort, Putting on Airs, in 2018, Erin Rae was living as the troubadours do. She spent the years between that release and the start of the pandemic on the road and, like any other artist, found that life come to a screeching halt. On Friday, February 4th, she’ll return with her new album, Lighten Up, an appropriate title both for our times and for the album. This latest collection is an amalgam of dreamy, psychedelic country, indie-rock, and believably vintage folk. Thematically, too, the album is a bit like an old kaleidoscope — social commentary and musings on gender equality mor...

Sony is looking to wrap up Dakota Johnson as the star of its first female-led Spider-Man universe adventure, Madame Web. The project was first announced back in 2019, with Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless working on the screenplay. Now, Deadline reports that Johnson is in final talks to lead the picture, with S.J. Clarkson (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, The Defenders) onboard as director. Created in 1980 by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Madame Web is a mutant with incredible psychic and clairvoyant capabilities. (Considering Marvel now owns mutants in their entirety again, it’s likely the character’s origins will be altered for the movie.) Johnson’s casting hints her general appearance will also be changed, as she’s most often depicted as an el...

To coincide with the news, she also released a new song called “The Manatee (A Story of This World Pt. III)” that was recorded during the same sessions as her 2021 album -io. Give it a listen below. “At 4:30 A.M. on February 4th, 2020 a manatee popped out of the sea and stared directly at me. It was a charged 10 seconds. The experience stuck with me so much that I wrote a song about it,” explained Circuit des Yeux’s Haley Fohr. “The music video, directed by Rudy Rubio, is a depiction of my own kind of manatee. I play a wet sea creature trying to make it work in a dry-land society… The manatee is my reminder that intuition and two legs might be all a person ne...
Flume has dropped off a new music video for his latest track “Say Nothing” featuring MAY-A, which arrives as the lead single from the Australian electronic artist’s forthcoming third album, Palaces. The visual sees Flume donning a bleach-blonde hairstyle and posing on motorcycles, while MAY-A becomes submerged in black sand between several psychedelic shots. “Say Nothing” marks Flume’s first release since Quits and Hi This Is Flume, both of which debuted in 2019. “This song is about feelings of post-relationship clarity,” Flume said in a statement. “We wrote the song midway through 2020 while the pandemic was still pretty new. I was really excited about the initial idea but it was only once I got back to Australia in early 2021 and linked up in the studio with MAY-A that the...
