Kristin Hayter will retire her beloved experimental project Lingua Ignota in early 2023. Known for composing bracing, cross-genre epics, Hayter said the decision would promote her mental health and prevent her from being “mired in the past,” as she put it on Instagram this morning (November 2). “This time last year I was non-functional,” she wrote. “Then, out of desperation, I gave myself permission to heal for the first time.” Her final performances, including her imminent fall tour and “a few things in early 2023,” will go ahead. The statement continued, in part, “I will not allow my wounds to destroy me. I want to live a healthy, happy life and have changed much in myself and my surroundings to bring light in. As such the art has to change too. It is not healthy for me to relive my wors...

Each month, Clint Worthington’s What Ever Happened To… catches us up with some of our favorite faces from our pop-culture past. It was updated in November 2022. We’ve all seen 1983’s A Christmas Story. The Bob Clark-directed holiday tale of little Ralphie and the many misadventures surrounding his ninth Christmas started out as darkly comic counterprogramming to the sunniness of traditional Christmas movies, only to become an annual tradition for most yuletide households. No one born after 1997 has ever had to seek out A Christmas Story; just walk past any random TV playing TNT on the day itself, and you’ll catch a glimpse of Ralphie shooting his eye out with a Red Ryder BB gun or Darren McGavin marveling at his leg lamp. As you read this, some TV somewhere is probably playing A Chri...
It’s not a good sign that Blockbuster, a workplace sitcom set inside a literal metaphor for late-stage capitalism, feels the need to call out the problem with its premise seven minutes into the pilot episode. “Isn’t it ironic that the small business taking a stand against the big corporation in this scenario is actually a franchise of a once-huge corporation, named after the exact type of big corporate movies that killed off smaller movies?” Blockbuster employee Eliza (Melissa Fumero) says, as her boss Tim (Randall Park) tries to rally his underdog staff. I’m admittedly coming to the show with a bias, as a former video store clerk who spent about two and a half years behind the counter of independent stores — stores that always struggled to compete with the Walmart of the industry. But des...

Selena Gomez introduced the world to the complexities of her mind and mental health through her new, aptly titled AppleTV+ documentary, My Mind & Me, which held its premiere at AFI Festival in Los Angeles, Calif., on Wednesday night (Nov. 2). “I was going to release this documentary multiple times and it never really felt right,” the star told Billboard on the red carpet at the event. “Then the pandemic hit and a lot of people started having conversations around mental health, the isolation, people feeling depressed or anxious — never feeling those feelings before but have now. I just hope that this will carry on to something like a conversation that people will use to help later on.” The theme of connection and starting a conversation rang true throughout the film, as Gomez sought hea...

Drake didn’t just find himself at the top of hip-hop. He’s chipped away, weaponizing his addiction to work, success, progress… and porn. The Canadian rap star appeared to give Howard Stern a little more than he bargained for when he and 21 Savage sat for a chat with the SiriusXM jock. In a snippet posted on Drizzy’s Instagram, the back-and-forth covers love, life and adult films. As it turns out, though, the real-looking interview was part of a deepfake headfake series that the duo released on Thursday (Nov. 2) to promote their delayed joint album, Her Loss. The phony spree also included a fake Vogue magazine cover and a mock NPR Tiny Desk concert.
