And just like that, House of the Dragon Season 1 is over — but it’ll be quite a while before we get to find out what happens next in Westeros, as HBO and HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys confirmed that the series’ second season likely won’t arrive until 2024. House of the Dragon Season 1 has seemingly had all Game of Thrones fans and their mothers in a chokehold since premiering back in August. But, it takes quite a while to build a kingdom — let alone seven! — and showrunners don’t want to make a promise they can’t keep. “Don’t expect it in ’23, but I think sometime in ’24,” Bloys told Vulture. He went on: “We’re just starting to put the plan together, and just like last time, there are so many unknowns. It’s not to be coy or secretive, but you don’t want...
Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Rihanna returns with a song written for the new Black Panther movie. It’s been over six years since Rihanna released new original solo material, 2016’s ANTI. Contrary to what some might have expected, though, the latest from the artist and business mogul isn’t an explosive comeback to introduce us to 2022 Rihanna — rather, the gentle, tender “Lift Me Up” features her singing over a sparse instrumental. Co-written with rising Nigerian artist Tems, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, and director Ryan Coogle...
Warning against the dangers of having “temptation in hand,” Pope Francis has urged nuns and priests to stop watching porn. According to the BBC, Francis was answering a question about digital and social media when he turned to the subject of explicit pornography. His Holiness called it “a vice that so many people have… even priests and nuns.” Francis has taken small steps to update the Catholic Church’s sexual mores, encouraging some forms of family planning and saying that followers don’t need to breed like “rabbits.” But the Church teaches that pornography is an affront to chastity. “The pure heart, the one that Jesus receives every day, cannot receive this pornographic information,” Francis said. Patti Smith Group’s song “Rock n Roll N****r,” which has drawn condemnation since its release on Easter in 1978, has disappeared from streaming services, Rolling Stone reports. Smith has made no comment on the removal, and it is unclear who made the decision. For decades, she defended the use of the slur, saying she wanted to reclaim the term for artists and people on the margins of society. In a Rolling Stone interview promoting Easter upon its release, Smith used the N-word to describe Mick Jagger in a similar spirit. When the interviewer pointed out that Jagger had not “suffered like anyone who grew up in Harlem,” she skirted around the question. In 1996, she acknowledged that “redefining” the “archaic slang term as a badge for those contributing on the fringe of society was not favorab...
Jerry Lee Lewis has died, The Associated Press reports. A cause of death has not been revealed, but, in recent years, Lewis dealt with various illnesses, such as acute bronchitis, which forced him to miss a birthday celebration in 2016. The controversial rock’n’roll pioneer, often referred to by his nickname “The Killer,” was 87 years old. Lewis’ death was erroneously reported by TMZ earlier this week. Lewis was born in Ferriday, Louisiana. From an early age, he played music with his cousins. He studied blues musicians at the local honky-tonk. He enrolled briefly at the Southwestern Bible Institute in Waxahatchie, Texas, but was kicked out for playing wild piano renditions of hymns. He eventually got a job in 1956 as a session musician at Sun Records in Memphis. One day, Lew...
Back in 2020, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon launched the nonpartisan For Wisconsin initiative to get out the vote in his home state. He’s now announced a handful of events “to build enthusiasm for voting” before Election Day (Tuesday, November 8). In addition to information on early voting locations, the events will feature limited-edition merchandise. In a statement, Vernon said: We’ve started For Wisconsin because normal wasn’t good enough. We’re all taught differing political and philosophical beliefs early on; we want to continue the conversations that take us beyond those differences. What can be better? That’s what we’re asking. No one is more powerful than a citizenry that is empowered and together. We’ll be asking, talking, listening, and expressing ourselves through meetings, con...
