Robert Glasper on Bringing His Multi-Faceted Piano Music to Austin City Limits, New Song with Mac Miller: “He Was a Trailblazer”

Austin City Limits might not be the first place you think of when you want to hear jazz, but if anyone could bring the genre to the wide-spanning music festival, it’d be Robert Glasper. The four-time Grammy winner is a renowned pianist, record producer, and songwriter, whose collaborations span roots-rock mainstays like Brittany Howard to modern hip-hop legends like Kendrick Lamar and the late Mac Miller; to call Glasper just a jazz musician would be immensely reductive. When Consequence caught up with him backstage at Weekend 2 of ACL just ahead of his set at the Tito’s Vodka stage, Glasper seemed relaxed, yet excited to return to his home state for the fest’s second weekend. It’s a little surprising given the circumstances; he’d just arrived from his current home base New York City, wher...

“Escape the Wormhole” With This 10-Year-Old Dubstep Producer

It’s never too young to find a hobby. In Mesophonic’s case, he found dubstep. At 10 years of age, the diminutive DJ and electronic music producer is poised to make a name for himself in the Denver area, a hub of promising bass music talent. Based in Fort Collins, Mesophonic started performing at the ripe age of seven, even though he could barely see over the DJ equipment. Inspired by experimental bass music, he spins a wonky blend of dubstep and riddim at his shows. Most recently, he performed at the Aggie Theater and Black Box, his team tells us. The Chainsmokers Are Removing “Kanye” From Streaming Services After Rapper’s Antisemitic Remarks

In the wake of antisemitic remarks made by Kanye West, The Chainsmokers are removing “Kanye,” a song released in 2014 that celebrates the disgraced rapper, from streaming services. On October 9th, West tweeted that he would go “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE,” triggering swift excoriation from around the world before doubling down in a since-deleted interview on the Drink Champs podcast. The American Jewish Community called the tweet a “vicious antisemitic comment” designed to incite “the hatred of Jews.” The Chainsmokers took to social media this week to condemn West and announce their plans to withdraw “Kanye” from Spotify, Apple Music and other digital service providers. The track contains the lyric, “I want to be...

Rihanna has officially announced “Lift Me Up,” her first new single as a lead artist since 2016. It’ll appear on the soundtrack to the new Marvel movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Rihanna co-wrote “Lift Me Up” with Tems, producer Ludwig Göransson, and director Ryan Coogler. According to a press release, the artists wrote the single “as a tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman,” the star of the first Black Panther film who died in 2020 at the age of 43. In a press statement, Tems said, “After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I mis...

Tory Lanez Ordered to House Arrest in Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Case

A Los Angeles judge has ruled that Tory Lanez should be placed under house arrest, TMZ and CBS News Los Angeles report. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek Condemns Kanye West’s “Awful” Antisemtic Comments, Says He Has No Authority to Remove His Music

Spotify’s Daniel Ek has spoken out against recent antisemitic comments from Kanye West. In an interview with Reuters, the co-founder and CEO called West’s remarks “just awful comments,” while noting that Spotify won’t be removing the rapper’s music from the platform. Ek went on to say that, because West’s statements were not made in songs or podcasts hosted on Spotify, they do not violate the company’s hate speech policy. “It’s really just his music, and his music doesn’t violate our policy,” he explained. “It’s up to his label, if they want to take action or not.” Ek’s comments follow a series of other actions taken by Spotify to reduce hate speech on the platform. In May 2018, the company introduced its hate content and hateful conduct policy. Under the policy, Spotify temporarily remove...
