Santigold is closing in on the release of her comeback album Spirituals. Ahead of its September 9th release, the indie veteran has shared another preview of what’s to come today with the single “Shake,” produced by SBTRKT. At just under two minutes, “Shake” doesn’t let its brevity prevent it from packing a punch. SBTRKT bolsters the song with a puttering, slightly off-kilter beat that feels a little reminiscent of Radiohead’s “Kid A,” as Santigold sings a message of perseverence over an ascending synth loop: “I won’t buckle under pressure/ Imma be alright/ I will never follow/ If I know the way/ But if you got my back/ I got you, set your worry free.” “‘Shake’ is one of those songs…that basically write themselves, and all you have to do as the artist is be open enough to reach out and...
Broken Bells have announced their new album, INTO THE BLUE, is out on October 7th via AWAL. The musical duo of The Shins’ James Mercer and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) also shared the latest single “Saturdays.” INTO THE BLUE finds Broken Bells drawing influence from The Beatles and Pink Floyd, as well as pulling from genres ranging from ’60s psychedelia and ’70s rock and AM Gold to ’80s new wave and ’90s trip-hop. The roster of the underground label Elephant 6 also continued to serve as a major inspiration. Pre-orders for the album are ongoing. See the artwork and tracklist below. Related Video Living up to its name, “Saturdays” wears the aforementioned inspirations on its sleeve and brings to mind a lazy weekend afternoon in the sun, though its lyrics aren’t as joyful as the melodies. ...
Pixies go on an epic journey from a 7-11 to the “Vault of Heaven” on their newest single. The track appears on their September 30th album, Doggerel, and if you live in California or New York, you’ll be able to hear it live on the band’s newly-announced four-date US tour. “Vault of Heaven” would seem to be about a bad drug trip, but that depends on a rare word they’re using often, “titrate.” As in, “There in the vault of heaven/ While trying to titrate/ I ended up in another case/ I went to 7-11 to try and get me straight/ I ended up there in outer space.” Most commonly, titration is an attempt to measure the concentration of a chemical, though in medicine the term is sometimes used when adjusting a dosage. Either way, the process doesn’t seem to be going well for Pixies. Black Fr...

The band collaborated with the likes of Jamie T, The Kills’ Jamie Hince, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Ryn Weaver, Mary Charteris, Ed Harcourt, and more on the record. “Getting to this point has been one of the craziest journeys in my life. I truly thought this day would never come,” said Furze in a stateme...
Back in March, Duckwrth shared a party-ready song called “Power Power.” Turns out, that was the lead single to his newly-announced EP Chrome Bull, which is due out August 26th via STEM. To keep the momentum going, he’s shared another new song today called “Ce Soir” with Syd, and he’s also unveiled a hefty list of tour dates across North America and Europe. While Duckwrth is keeping most other details about Chrome Bull EP under wraps for now, he’s promised that “once you press play, you won’t want to sit down.” Informed by innovative artists ranging from N.E.R.D. to Thom Yorke, what we’ve heard from Chrome Bull EP so far indicates it’ll be a staple for late-summer dance parties. “Ce Soir,” which translates to “tonight” in English, is sultry and soulful while still keepin...
DJ Khaled has shared his new collab “Staying Alive” featuring Drake and Lil Baby as well as its hospital-themed music video. The mid-tempo collab is the lead single off Khaled’s upcoming 13th studio album God Did, which will arrive on August 26th via We The Best Music Group/Epic Records as a follow-up to last year’s Khaled Khaled. The track interpolates Bee Gees’ 1977 disco classic of the same name, with all three members of the group accordingly listed in the credits. On the chorus, Drake croons, “Try me a hundred times/ Wanted me to lie, wanted me to cry, wanted me to die/ I, I, I, I’m stayin’ alive, I’m stayin’ alive, I’m stayin’ alive, I’m stayin’ alive.” In the music video, the superstar rappers turn the Khaled Khaled Hospital For Those That Didn’t Believe™ into a veritable hou...

She initially previewed the album by sharing “<maybe> it’s my fault” as the lead sinle. In the Jaxon Whittington-helmed video for “hover like a GODDESS,” WILLOW is bathed in neon-tinged light as she sings, “When I walk, you fuckin’ hover like a goddess/ Just meet me under the covers, baby, I wish/ I’ve gotta be free, my army intends to please you/ Touches the vinyl, like you to say/ Yeah” over hard-charging electric guitars and drums. “Every woman deserves to be worshipped,” she added about the new single in a statement. “This song is an ode to...
After sharing a pair of comeback singles, The Mars Volta are finally ready to release their first proper album in 10 years. Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López have announced a new self-titled album, due out on September 16th via Cloud Hill. In anticipation, a new song called “Vigil” is out now. The Mars Volta released their most recent album Noctourniquet in 2012 before Bixler-Zavala and Rodríguez-López went their separate ways. Carly Rae Jepsen has unveiled her latest single “Beach House” and its accompanying music video. Watch it below. Jepsen revealed the song’s inspiration in a TikTok ahead of its release, saying: “Caught a song idea a while back I’ve been wanting to share. It’s silly. It’s fun. I blame summer and my sister. And dating apps and the experiences so bad that they immediately have to turn funny or how else could we cope? Happy dancing and/or happy nightmares.” “Beach House” serves as the second preview of the singer’s upcoming sixth album, The Loneliest Time, which she announced earlier this week will be released October 21st. Lead single “Western Wind,” meanwhile, kicked off the new era at the beginning of May. Advertisement Related Video Back in June, the “Call Me Maybe” singer sat down for an i...
Maybe the only thing more terrifying than staying single forever is winding up in a relationship that’s grown stale. Stella Donnelly navigates the woes of a spark that’s burned out on today’s new single “How Was Your Day?,” another sample of her forthcoming album Flood. Inspired by watching numerous romantic relationships succumb to ennui throughout the pandemic, “How Was Your Day?” is quintessential Donnelly, blithely switching between her perky singing voice and deadpan spoken word. “Level-headedness has made way for a disastrous love,” she rants over an upbeat jangle. “I know it, you know it.” You can almost imagine her pacing around a living room mid-argument to her partner’s chagrin. “This is my attempt at building a song out of a very specific dynamic between two monogamously in...
Whitmer Thomas has unveiled his new album, The Older I Get the Funnier I Was, as the follow-up to his March EP Can’t Believe You’re Happy Here. It was produced by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte and arrives October 21st. The comedian-musician will embark on a newly-announced Fall 2022 North American tour directly after (grab your tickets here). The Older I Get features contributions from Duterte, Al Menne of Great Grandpa, Christian Lee Hutson, and Phoebe Bridgers’ guitarist Harrison Whitford. It was partially inspired by the reaction to Thomas’ acclaimed 2020 HBO special The Golden One — particularly the surprisingly muted response from residents of Alabama where most of his coming-of-age material was set. In a statement, he shared, “In the years I’d been performing that show, I’d been romantici...
