<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-09T16:21:05+00:00“>April 9, 2021 | 12:21pm ET The Lowdown: We’re now deep into the heart of hip-hop’s psychedelic era. As modern-day rappers and producers have begun to embrace the use of psilocybin and LSD, the mind-altering effects are starting to bleed into the music. But for the same reason that shrooms are being legalized for therapeutic purposes, these drugs, if taken in the right doses and circumstances, can inspire deep reflection and serious psychological growth. Not that BROCKHAMPTON needed any help to gaze inwardly. This Texas crew opt for introspection over braggadocio and thoughtfulness over arrogance. But the tone of their sixth full-length and the subject matter wi...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-09T20:24:06+00:00“>April 9, 2021 | 4:24pm ET You’d be hard-pressed to find a more momentous concert video than DMX’s performance at Woodstock ’99. The 50-year-old rap veteran was sadly pronounced dead earlier today after spending a week in the hospital from a drug-induced heart attack, but thousands of his fans have memorialized his name by sharing clips from the 1999 set on social media. It’s how he deserves to be remembered. Woodstock ’99 was by nearly every metric a disaster (the heat was brutal, the food and water were dangerously overpriced, the crowds were unmanageably large, and there were numerous reported sexual assaults), but DMX’s 45-minute set felt like a beam of heav...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-09T21:50:09+00:00“>April 9, 2021 | 5:50pm ET The Lowdown: “For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work,” Taylor Swift wrote in a 2019 social media post after her longtime label, Big Machine, sold her master recordings without her consent. Swift had been unable to gain control of her first six albums through contract negotiations, and then Scooter Braun, who’d demonstrated public enmity with the singer-songwriter, was collecting the checks. (Braun’s company has since sold the masters to Shamrock Holdings for $300 million.) What’s one of the world’s brightest superstars and the preeminent pop poet of a generation to do? The answer: Do it all again. Swift has begun to re-...
Welcome to Planet Her. It’s a mysterious, flourishing world filled with glittering oases, calming zen gardens, pastel sunset skies, and blossoming cherry trees that is ruled by two larger-than-life queens: Doja Cat and Sza. This is the backdrop for the team’s newest music video for “Kiss Me More,” out Friday (April 9), and the first glimpse of Doja’s forthcoming album, Planet Her. The Warren Fu-directed visual kicks off when a wayward astronaut, played by Alex Landi, crash-lands during a mission to explore the uncharted planet. As he voyages through sand and sea, alien versions of Doja and Sza provide soulful ambiance to his journey as they croon along to the sensuous, slow-grooving disco track. Doja is no stranger to se...
Red Velvet’s Wendy made her debut as a solo artist this week with “Like Water,” an ethereal acoustic ballad that compares the free-flowing nature of the liquid to healing, everlasting love. “My love is like water / Filling your sore spots,” she sings. “It covers the deep wounds and embraces you tightly / It makes you rise again.” Finding beauty in simplicity, the stripped-back tune allows Wendy’s soaring vocals to take center stage as she effortlessly flits from delicate humming to phenomenal high notes. Cool, clear, and cleansing, “Like Water” is a refreshing, thirst-quenching new start for the singer. —Emlyn Travis You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. Whether they’re jumping, popping, or jopping, SuperM are always on the move. Now, the K-pop supergroup is encouraging listeners to get up and dance in the shoulder-shimmying music video for the funky new single “We Do,” released Friday (April 9). Kicking off in a laundromat, the visual puts the septet’s incredible dancing chops at the forefront. Member Ten easily jumps into the splits, while Kai glides smoothly across the stage; at another moment, Mark and Taemin kick their feet to the beat in perfect synchronicity. In between the cleanly choreographed performances, the group keeps the mood light and cheery as they wait for their laundry to finish and play a few games of pool and dominos with one another. It all culminates in a colorful firework...
