This time around, the Shabaka Hutchings-led group brings in guests like Chicago singer Angel Bat Dawid, poets Moor Mother and Joshua Idehen, grime MC D Double E, and British rapper/spoken word artist Kojey Radical. “Black to the Future is a sonic poem for the invocation of power, remembrance and healing. Yet in the end, the overarching message remains the same: Fo...

Pop punk band Wavves have returned with “Sinking Feeling”, their first new song since 2017. Check it out via the accompanying music video below. “Sinking Feeling” marks the return of Wavves to Fat Possum Records and came together with the help of TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek after the band initially workshopped the song in a series of now-abandoned studio sessions. Although the single’s surf rock guitars evoke summertime, the lyrics address the all-encompassing darkness of depression. “It’s there on your face/ It sits in your mind,” sings frontman Nathan Williams. “It’s like this all the time.” In a statement, Williams elaborated on the meaning of the track. “‘Sinking Feeling’ is a song about a wave of depression that keeps coming back,” he said. “It’s that sinking feeling that drags ...

Lil Nas X Trolls Critics of Music Video and Satan Shoe with “Apology” Video

On Friday, Lil Nas X released a provocative music video for his latest song, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, in which the rapper gives Satan a lap dance before snapping the Devil’s neck. Adding to the inevitable controversy, he also teamed with Brooklyn art collective MSCHF for a “Satan Shoe” allegedly containing one drop of human blood. Conservatives predictably lost their collective minds, with prominent figures like commentator Candace Owens and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem taking the bait. What Lil Nas X’s critics forgot, however, is that he grew up on the internet. The Atlanta rapper ran a popular Nicki Minaj stan account and spent months trying to meme his way into making “Old Town Road” a hit before it eventually broke through to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. As such, he pos...

System of a Down’s Daron Malakian Supports “Gun” Cover of “B.Y.O.B.” and Guns, In General

System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian had thus far been relatively quiet throughout the recent political headlines surrounding his bandmates — specifically the polar opposite beliefs between left-leaning singer Serj Tankian and right-wing drummer John Dolmayan. However, Malakian recently offered his support for Second Amendment gun rights by reposting a video of a drum cover of SOAD’s “B.Y.O.B.” using firearms as percussion. The video was created by “GunDrummer”, a guy who actually shoots guns to make beats, as he plays along to the song with pistols, rifles, and machine guns. The footage (below) is literally triggering, so watch with discretion. Malakian, who released the 2019 single “Guns Are Loaded” with his band Scars on Broadway, used the occasion to announce his pro-gun stance wi...

The concept album is written from the perspective of Earth, and the new song addresses the hypocrisy of humanity as the planet’s destruction approaches a point of no return. With textured backing vocals from electronica musician Gazelle Twin, Numan hauntingly sings lyrics like, “Can you feel your righteous anger/ It’s like a poison that feeds the soul/ Can you hide from snakes and liars/ Every word is the death of me.” In a statement, Numan elaborated on the song’s meaning. “‘Saints And Liars’ is the Earth drawing attention to our blind faith in religion, in a fictitious God, who in reality does nothing for us, while at the same...

Heavy Culture: Moonspell’s Fernando Ribeiro Talks Hermitage, Pandemic, Growing Up in Portugal, and More

Heavy Culture is a monthly column from journalist Liz Ramanand, focusing on artists of different cultural backgrounds in heavy music as they offer their perspectives on race, society, and more as it intersects with and affects their music. The latest installment of this column features an interview with Moonspell frontman Fernando Ribeiro. The year 2020 made most of us embrace our hermit-like ways. Little did Moonspell singer Fernando Ribeiro know that the word Hermitage that he came across in 2017 would be an apt title for the band’s brand new album. The new release Hermitage is the veteran Portuguese gothic metal band’s 12th full-length studio album. The LP focuses on topics such as solitude and isolation, but also on community. Heavy Consequence caught up with Ribeiro via Skype in mid-M...

Demi Lovato has come out as pansexual. In a new interview with Joe Rogan, the 28-year-old popstar opened up about coming to terms with her sexuality and how she currently defines it. Lovato has been transparent about her romantic interests for a few years now, dating back to a 2017 segment of her Simply Complicated documentary in which she admitted that she was interested in both men and women. “I am open to human connection,” she said at the time. “So whether that’s through a male or a female, it doesn’t matter to me,” In 2020, she detailed what it was like to come out to her parents a few years back, and then she continued to speak about her sexuality in her Glamour cover story from earlier this month, saying that she’s “really queer”. “I know who I am and what I am, but I’m ju...
