Crate Digging is a recurring feature in which we take a deep dive into a genre and turn up several albums or bands that all music fans should know about. As classic gaming series Guitar Hero turns 15 this week, we look at 10 bands a generation of fans likely learned about through gaming rather than crate digging. In the mid-to-late 2000s, the Guitar Hero series was the party game to own. Initially a partnership between publisher/hardware manufacturer RedOctane and developer Harmonix, the brand built upon the latter’s prior music-based projects — such as Frequency, Karaoke Revolution, and Amplitude — and other genre titans like Dance Dance Revolution, GuitarFreaks, Gitaroo Man, and PaRappa the Rapper. Essentially, players had to match button combinations and rhythmic cues to the arrangement...

Additionally, the veteran rockers have announced a new concert event to be streamed live from the Roxy in Hollywood on Saturday, November 14th. The video for “Shame Shame” was directed by Paola Kudacki and features the Algerian-French actress and dancer Sofia Boutella (The Mummy, Atomic Blonde, the Kingsman franchise). Tori Amos has announced a new holiday-themed EP called Christmastide. Due out next month, the project features four original songs from the beloved chamber-pop artist. The EP marks the first new solo material from Amos since her 2017 full-length, Native Invader, but it’s actually not her first foray into the world of holiday music. Back in 2009, she released an album called Midwinter Graces that included reworked Christmas carols and a few seasonal originals, and way back in 1998 she recorded a beautiful cover of the classic tune “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”. However, this set of songs is unique in that they will arrive during a particularly lonely Christmas season and at the end of a horrendous year. In a statement, Amos said that Christmastide is supposed ...
Irish post-punk band The Clockworks have shared a stirring new song called “Enough Is Never Enough”. It’s the latest release from Creation 23, the new label from Creation Records founder Alan McGee, known for championing ’90s acts like Oasis, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream early on in their careers. The London by way of Garland, IE band have only put out a handful of singles since McGee signed them back in 2019, but all of them have been incredibly promising for such a young act. That said, “Enough Is Never Enough” is definitely their best so far, as it finds a happy middle ground between the snarling post-punk of IDLES, the hollering garage rock of The Hives, and the gloomy indie-punk of early Cloud Nothings. It’s equal parts catchy and clamorous on the musical end, but it also contai...

The Pretty Reckless and singer Taylor Momsen have never shied away from expressing their love for the music of Soundgarden. Now, the hard rockers have paid tribute to the grunge pioneers with a cover of “Loud Love”. Momsen is no stranger to Soundgarden covers, having performed a quarantine version of “Halfway There” with Soundgarden / Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron earlier this year. Her vocal ability is well-suited for tackling the impressive vocal range of late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, and she turns in another strong effort on this emotionally charged, faithful rendition of “Loud Love”.
