Uncut Gems Now Streaming on Netflix

Want to add an anxiety attack to your Memorial Day weekend? Uncut Gems is on Netflix. Featuring Adam Sandler’s greatest role to date — an Oscar snub that even the Sandman agrees with — the Safdie brothers’ unnerving thriller centers around a Jewish jeweler drowning in debt amidst New York’s Diamond District. The film also stars The Weeknd, Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield, Kevin Garnett, and Julia Fox. Editors’ Picks One of the 10 best films of 2019, our own Brett Arnold wrote in his glowing review for Consequence of Sound: “It’s grim, to be sure, but it’s packaged as a nail-biting thriller, one that builds to an amazing high-wire-act of a finale that turns a 2012 Celtics playoff game into the most important thing you’ve ever seen in cinema.” Consequence of Sound also spoke to the Saf...

Netflix’s Dark Begins Final Cycle In Season 3 Trailer: Watch

Netflix has announced that Dark returns for its third and final season on Saturday, June 27th. If that date sends shivers down your spine, that’s because it’s the same day as the much-touted apocalypse in the series. Based on the fire and brimstone in the new trailer below, it would appear the end times are approaching. Diehard fans will be pleased to see a number of familiar faces emerge from the smoke, particularly Jonas who asks arguably the toughest question of all: “Why am I here?” Odds are the German drama will finally put everything on the table, ending all the cycles that have made it one of the more pretzeled watches in recent memory. Editors’ Picks Catch it down yonder, and start your rewatch. As Alex Huntsberger stated in his positive Season 2 review, “refreshing yourself ...

Netflix’s Space Force Is A Waste of Space, Talent, Resources, Time: Review

The Pitch: In the Summer of 2018, the U.S. government announced a sixth branch of the armed forces, to be called the “Space Force.” A nation scratched their heads, but President Donald J. Trump tweeted out “Space Force all the way!” to the delight of his neo-conservative base and those who still think the current administration taps into a rich vein of comedy. It played to the tune of 128,000 likes. In January 2019, Netflix announced a new series based on the venture, to be developed by The Office’s Greg Daniels and Steve Carrell, with the latter starring. And now, for May 2020, Netflix’s Space Force arrives with a veritable Right Stuff-grade line-up of sitcom stars – Carrell, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang, Ben Schwartz, Jane Lynch, Patrick Warburton, the late Fred Willard, and on and on – wi...

Adult Swim Revives Tuca & Bertie for Season 2

Tuca & Bertie officially have their wings back. Season 2 of the animated anthropomorphic sitcom has been revived by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Created by Lisa Hanawalt, a producer and illustrator on BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie enjoyed just one season on Netflix before being canceled July 2019. The pulling of the plug came as a shock, as the TV series earned rave reviews right from the get-go. At the time, Hanawalt blamed the cancellation on Netflix’s reliance on algorithm data. “T&B is critically acclaimed and has repeatedly been called one of the best new shows of the year,” she said. “None of this makes a difference to an algorithm, but it’s important to me and the way I want to continue making art in this world.” Adult Swim, the proud home of Rick and Morty, ...

Netflix to Start Cancelling Inactive Customer Subscriptions

Sourced from Getty Images. Netflix says it will begin to ask customers who have not watched anything on the on-demand video streaming service in a year or more if they wish to maintain their subscription — and will cancel their membership if it does not hear back. The company says it has started to notify customers who haven’t watched anything on the platform in 12 months since they became a subscriber to check if they wish to keep their membership. The company is also reaching out to those who haven’t streamed anything in more than two years, it says. “You know that sinking feeling when you realize you signed up for something but haven’t used it in ages? At Netflix, the last thing we want is people paying for something they’re not using,” the company writes. This unusual move illustrates ...

Netflix’s The Lovebirds Brings Out the Best in Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae: Review

The Pitch: Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) are four years into a relationship that’s on the fritz. They snip at one another. They argue over the littlest things. They can’t even imagine themselves winning The Amazing Race. All of that drama is put on hold, however, when the two fading lovebirds fly right into a maddening murder mystery that takes them all across New Orleans. Even worse, they’re the prime suspects. Can they solve the crime before they’re taken in to do the time? That all depends on whether or not they can set aside their differences and find a way to be a team again. The Big Schtick: The Lovebirds reunites director Michael Showalter and Nanjiani, who both leveled up with 2017’s heartfelt and hilarious The Big Sick. It’s a strong collaboration and this latest...

Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa Prepare for Massive Demand in Data Services

Since the onset of COVID-19 and the consequential lockdown, reliable and fast Internet connectivity has become a vital requirement for businesses and individuals working and learning from home. Expansion in the digital economy and the resultant exponential growth in demand for connectivity is driving the laying of underground fibre-optic cable to feed internet-hungry homes and businesses. It is arguably the highest-growth industry in South Africa today, outstripping other sectors of the economy – even before the current crisis. That’s according to Jessica Spira, Business Development Director at Rand Merchant Bank (RMB). The bank was the joint mandated lead arranger and co-funder of an $8.7-million (R16-billion) senior debt financing package provided to Community Investment Ventures Holding...

Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams Sing “Volcano Man” from Netflix’s Eurovision: Watch

The real Eurovision may be cancelled, but this summer Netflix is releasing Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The new comedy is out June 26th, and instead of a traditional trailer, the streaming giant has shared “Volcano Man”, a bonkers music video performed by Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell. In the grand Eurovision tradition, “Volcano Man” is both catchy and utterly nonsensical. It’s nothing more or less than a soaring synth pop ode to a man who lives on a volcano. “Volcano man!” Ferrell roars, as McAdams replies, “He’s got my melting heart!”  The video is set on an idyllic Scandinavian fjord, and features viking attire, over-the-top makeup, and lots of Ferrell’s heavy breathing. Check out “Volcano Man” below. Via Rolling Stone, Ferrell and McAdams star as as...

Blige, Cameron Britton, David Castañeda, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Colm Feore, Adam Godley, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher. Spike Lee is back with a new joint next month. The legendary filmmaker will premiere Da 5 Bloods, his highly anticipated follow-up to 2018’s BlacKkKlansman, on Netflix on Friday, June 12th. Today, he’s dropped its epic first trailer. Soundtracked by the Chamber Brothers’ excellent “Time Has Come Today”, the trailer gives a stylish first look at the post-war film that stars Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Paul Walter, and Jean Reno. Once again, the film follows four veterans who return to Vietnam searching for the remains of their fallen squad leader — and some treasure. Watch below. Even in the middle of a pandemic, it just seems like the rich and connected can get away with anything. Later this month, Netflix will explore how one such infamously corrupt multimillionaire, Jeffrey Epstein, got away with decades of sexual abuse in the new docuseries Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich. Premiering May 27th, the four-part Filthy Rich traces how Epstein “managed to lie and manipulate his way to the top of the financial world” while running an expansive international sex trafficking ring. Topics touched upon in the series include Epstein’s private island (nicknamed “Pedophile Island”), his unbelievable 2008 please deal with the US government, and the “spiderweb” that made up his inner circle of connections — including Donald Trump. Perhaps most importantly, however, the docuseries...
