Fontaines D.C. are back with a brooding new single. Listen to “I Love You” below. Like the curt “Life ain’t always empty” refrain of 2020’s “A Hero’s Death,” “I Love You” pounds its positive message into your skull with music so menacing, you question its intent. “I love you, I love you, I told you I do,” Grian Chatten insists, as swirling, Cure-style guitar fades in over slow-thumping bass. “It’s all I’ve ever felt, I’ve never felt so well,” he speak-sings. Once more with feeling, perhaps? “Ostensibly a love song,” as a press release puts it, Dublin’s favorite post punks fit some local commentary into the song of devotion as well, prompting Chatten to name the single “the first overtly political song we’ve written.” “It’s standing in the center of our beloved home country as a multitude o...
Rising Compton rapper Buddy has announced his sophomore album Superghetto, due out March 25th via Cool Lil Company/RCA Records. As a preview, he shared the new single “Wait Too Long” featuring fellow LA native Blxst. Superghetto will arrive four years after Buddy’s major label debut Harlan & Alondra, but he’s considerably raised his profile since then by contributing extensively to the Dreamville compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III, opening for Vince Staples, and performing at NPR’s Tiny Desk. He also released “Black 2” — a track calling out those who like to appropriate and profit from Black culture — during the period of civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Buddy explained how his upbringing influenced Superghetto. ...
Wye Oak singer Jenn Wasner has shared “Pure Love” and “Time,” two new songs from her solo project Flock of Dimes. “Pure Love” and “Time” arrive as part of the singles series from Sylvan Esso’s Psychic Hotline label. Co-produced by Wasner and Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn and recorded at Betty’s in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the singles offer a welcome respite from pandemic-induced darkness. “After spending so much time over the past two years sitting with my grief — both personally and creatively — I’m thrilled to offer up two songs that center joy, hopefulness, and pleasure,” Wasner said in a statement. “What can I say about ‘Pure Love’? It’s a fun pop song about how wanting more is the cause of so much suffering! To me, overall, it’s a song about reaching for a more pure way of being...

Now that Tomberlin has settled into her new home base of Brooklyn among a fleet of musical collaborators, much of i don’t know who needs to hear this… was rec...
Ben Gibbard’s latest project has been compiling an album of Yoko Ono covers in honor of the iconic — and often misunderstood — musician. Today, his band Death Cab for Cutie have shared their own contribution to Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono before its February 18th release. “Waiting for the Sunrise” originally appeared on Ono’s 1973 double album Approximately Infinite Universe, which she co-produced with her husband John Lennon. The album saw Ono move from her avant-garde musical beginnings into a more straightforward pop sound, although “Waiting for the Sunrise” still has an endearing quirky spunk. Death Cab’s cover stays pretty authentic to Ono’s original, utilizing the same propulsive drum beat. They do give it a more rock-forward feel by adding some lovely vocal harmonies and a great ...
Destroyer have a Valentine’s Day present for you, and spoiler alert, it’s a new song. The Canadian indie rockers have shared “Eat the Wine, Drink the Bread,” the latest preview of their forthcoming album, LABYRINTHITIS. With Joshua Wells’ percussion and John Collins’ drum programming in the spotlight, “Eat the Wine, Drink the Bread” — no, that’s not a typo — juxtaposes a galloping, disco-infused beat with frontman Dan Bejar’s subtle melancholy. “Been meaning to wear my hair like this for ages/ I mean down, down, all the way down,” he sings. Over a bright instrumental, Bejar’s solemn delivery seems to say: Life is hard, so why not indulge in its comforts while we’re here? Listen to “Eat the Wine, Drink the Bread” below. Not content with releasing an album’s worth of Valentine’s Day jams last year, Silk Sonic have returned with their new single “Love’s Train.” Stream it below. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s latest soundtrack for… ahem, adult activities is the dynamic duo’s rendition of a 1983 classic by R&B and funk band Con Funk Shun. “We love this song so much we wanted to sing it for y’all,” they wrote on Twitter. Staying true to the original version, Mars and .Paak easily slip into their seductive roles. “I’m down on my knee, I wanna please you, baby,” Mars sings. “Ooh, I’ll be your righteous lover.” Interestingly, “Love’s Train” was inspired by a situation in which two members of Con Funk Shun were unknowingly chasing the same woman. Less than a year after sharing his self-titled fourth album, Vince Staples has another full-length project on the way. As a preview, the rapper has dropped “Magic,” the first single from the forthcoming Ramona Park Broke My Heart. With a bouncy pop-rap beat courtesy of Mustard, “Magic” is an instant earworm with a sunny exterior, although its subject matter has a darker connotation. The track sees Staples reminisce on his working-class upbringing in North Long Beach, California. “I’d never get to pull up in a Benz with my locs,” he quips. But now, with the hindsight of having “made it,” “Magic” instead serves as a celebration of overcoming systemic oppression. “I won’t ever tell ’em how I did it, it was magic,” he boasts, relishing in having beaten the odds stacked against him. A good Valentine’s Day gift should be something rare and personal, so consider this the greatest V-Day present ever: Godspeed! You Black Emperor have finally reissued their “lost” debut album, All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling. For years, 1994’s All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling was something akin to a myth. The effort was created almost entirely by Efrim Menuck under the name God Speed You Black Emperor! (note the different spelling and punctuation). According to the band, only 33 copies of the album existed on cassette, and even almost 30 years later, no confirmed tapes have turned up. Apparent leaks appeared online in 2013 and again earlier this month, but now GS!YBE has given the record an official release. Advertisement Related Video Shared via Bandcamp, ALFot...
