Brittany Howard has lent her voice to jazz drummer Nate Smith’s new song “Fly (For Mike).” If you’ve heard Howard, you’ve likely heard Smith, as he brought his ear for percussion to her 2019 album Jaime. But he’s been a well-respected sideman for years, and has previously sat in with modern jazz greats like Dave Holland, Chris Potter, and Robin Eubanks, as well as hitting the kit for Paul Simon on 2018’s In the Blue Light. “Fly (For Mike)” is a single off Smith’s upcoming album Kinfolk 2: See the Birds, out September 17th. The song is soft and cold, like snow falling at dusk. The track comes with a special dedication. “Every time I fly, I think of my late father, to whom this song is dedicated,” Smith said in a statement. “When I wrote it, I wanted the music to evoke a ...

The new album from singer-songwriter Clairo is here. Titled Sling, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter’s sophomore album was co-produced alongside in-demand studio wiz Jack Antonoff. The album sees Clairo build on the vulnerable, hushed indie-pop of her 2019 debut, Immunity. Press materials for Sling describe the record as an “exploration of mental health, unmet expectations, and the struggle to treat ourselves with gentleness and love,” with a lot of the subject matter inspired by Clairo’s newly-adopted dog, Joanie. “When I got Joanie, I started changing my routines and habits to healthier ones, to try to create an environment where she felt comfortable and happy,” Clairo said in a statement. “It made me realize I hadn’t been doing that for myself, and that I need to look at myself with the...
Kevin Abstract has just released a new single called “SLUGGER” featuring Slowthai and $not. Plus, it comes with a music video directed by the BROCKHAMPTON rapper himself. Stream it after the jump. Produced by Romil Hemnani, Al Hug, and Kevin Abstract, the song is a bombastic and bold number that sees him trading verses with his fellow rappers and friends. As usual, both he and Slowthai demand your attention on “SLUGGER” with ease, spitting lines with the dexterous ease of their usual flow. The latter...

Born in Nigeria and raised in Canada, TOBi is a rapper on the rise. He’s now teamed with Mick Jenkins for a new meditation on intoxication, “Off the Drugs.” This is not a confessional track or an ode to sobriety, and in fact, the woozy guitars and giddy horns ensure that “Off the Drugs” would sound great while high as a kite. The song opens with one of our favorite legal potions, as TOBi raps, “Caught me slippin’, I was sippin’ bourbon/ Unfamiliar feelings, it’s that liquid courage.” Throughout the song, he also gets buzzed off the bag, ripped off romance, and just plain stoned. “When off the drugs,” he sings, “Show me some love/ On a good trip and I hope it never end/ High as a ceiling fan and I got the spins.” For his part, Jenkins rolls through and rolls up, spinning together ...
Rosé unveiled her take on Paramore’s “The Only Exception” while appearing on the South Korean variety show Sea of Hope. Seated on the ground outside a Korean food stall, the BLACKPINK singer strummed an acoustic guitar while accompanied by another guitarist and a keyboard player. “When I was younger I saw my daddy cry/ And curse at the wind/ He broke his own heart and I watched/ As he tried to reassemble it/ And my momma swore that she would/ Never let herself forget/ And that was the day that I promised/ I’d never sing of love if it does not exist,” she sang. The laidback performance follows Rosé’s earlier cover of John Mayer’s 2006 classic “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” from the same program late last month.
