My15: Magdalena Bay Share the Playlist of Songs That Have Been on Repeat Since 2007

It’s Consequence‘s 15th anniversary, and all September long we’ll be sharing artist-curated playlists that reflect the evolution of their music taste throughout the last 15 years. For today’s My15 playlist, Magdalena Bay assemble an eclectic selection of pop classics, indie jams, and prog rock. Magdalena Bay are pop stars of an alternate reality. The duo, which consists of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Levin, has an affinity for sophisticated synth pop, with visuals that span from online chaos to uncanny valley-esque skits. And though their bubbly vision of pop in their 2021 debut album Mercurial World — which is set to receive a deluxe edition on September 23rd — is a fascinating foray into their sound, it’s also a celebration of the music they grew up on. Magdalena Bay’s concoctio...

Purity Ring Release shrines X for 10th Anniversary: Stream

Purity Ring are celebrating 10 years of their debut album with a new reissue dubbed, shrines X. In addition to the full 2012 LP, the expanded edition features three previously unreleased tracks. shrines X adds on new songs “iovein” and “firmament,” as well as a demo version of album opener “crawlersout” called “crawlersout (prototype).” Of the three additions, “iovein” is a particularly transfixing standout, as Megan James sings, “Build your little fort out in the garden/ Kill your little men and bake their bones/ Build our little guns out of their counterparts/ Peel their skin for paper on the walls,” over bandmate Corin Roddick’s glitchy electronic production. Djo (Stranger Things’ Joe Keery) Shares New Single “Gloom”: Stream

Djo, the solo music outlet for Stranger Things star Joe Keery, has unveiled the new single “Gloom” from his upcoming second solo album, Decide. The track finds the singer-songwriter resolutely “ready to go” as he lists off a number of irreverent excuses to make an exit. The pulsing, fuzzed-out beat pops and snaps along with Keery’s blunt quips like “Your girlfriend scares me/ She’s got bad breath,” and it all builds up to a bracing end as his way out nears. Stream “Gloom” below. “Gloom” has been preceded by the ebullient mid-June single “Change,” which was revealed along with the announcement of the new album. Decide arrives September 16th via AWAL Recordings and follows Keery’s 2019 solo debut Twenty Twenty. Pre-orders will open on Thursday, July 28th along with the release of t...

Purity Ring’s Shrines Turns 10: How the Debut Laid a Masterful Foundation for the Future of Pop

Purity Ring‘s Megan James and Corin Roddick describe their debut album, Shrines, as one with very strict rules. “All the drums sound a certain way, all the vocals sound a certain way, all the synths… we created a strict palate of things that sort of worked together and tried to make as many different kind of musical ideas within that palette,” Roddick tells Consequence. Indeed, Shrines — which celebrates its tenth anniversary today, July 20th — is an album that represents Purity Ring operating with only their essentials, forging a path that would later define the sound of modern pop, if only for a portion of the last decade. When you look at Purity Ring’s output following Shrines (2015’s Another Eternity, 2020’s WOMB, and most recently, their EP Graves, which ...

Superorganism Unveil New Single “Into the Sun” with Stephen Malkmus and More: Stream

Superorganism have gathered an eclectic guest roster for their latest single “Into the Sun,” off their upcoming second album, World Wide Pop. Their biggest single from this album cycle yet — at least based on its headcount — features Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus, Japanese actor and musician Gen Hoshino, French artist and former tourmate Pi Ja Ma, and producer Axel Concato. “Into the Sun” is paired with an animation-based music video that puts visuals to the song’s bugged-out musings and “world spinnin’ round and round” refrain. Directed by AEVA, and a mix of 2D and 3D animation by Neirin Best and Nicholas Barnes, the visual follows a concept developed by the band that guitarist Harry said “stemmed from the lyric about being a fruit fly, watching the world go by, whilst nature and time...

Tears for Fears Perform “No Small Thing” on Kelly Clarkson: Watch

Earlier this year, Tears for Fears released The Tipping Point, their first studio album in 17 years. To help promote the project, they (virtually) swung by The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday, where they offered a live rendition of the new song “No Small Thing.” Watch a replay of the performance below. “No Small Thing” marked a musical departure for Tears for Fears, as Roland Orzabal croons over a folksy guitar instead of electronic drum beats and synthesizers. Still, in the pre-recorded performance, a rowdy backing band helps Orzabal and Curt Smith take off into a noisy climax, delivering a full, anthemic sound all the same. Back in February, Tears for Fears performed The Tipping Point single “Break the Man” and classic track “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” on the Late ...

Empress Of Announces Save Me EP, Shares “Dance for You”: Stream

Lorely Rodriguez, otherwise known as Empress Of, has revealed her upcoming EP, Save Me, out June 24th, and shared the new single “Dance for You” and its accompanying video. Watch it below. The latest offering from Rodriguez was developed over several writing trips in 2021 that included Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas and Los Angeles before finally landing in Minneapolis to hammer out the rest with longtime collaborator and producer BJ Burton (Charli XCX, Bon Iver). The drifting, nomadic nature of Save Me was all part of a concerted effort by Rodriguez: As she claimed in a statement, “one of the biggest key things for me making music is being out of my comfort zone.” “When you’re out of your comfort zone, that’s when innovation happens,” she shared. “I went around renting these spaces, trave...

Purity Ring Announce New EP Graves, Share Title Track: Stream

Purity Ring have announced their new EP, Graves, out June 3rd via the band’s own label The Fellowship. As a preview, the duo have shared the title track after it was premiered at a virtual listening party earlier this week. Not much else is available in the way of details, but vocalist and songwriter Megan James revealed in a statement that “graves” was nearly a decade in the making. “This song has been haunting us for eight straight years so we’re very glad to let it be heard,” she said. “We hope it brings you as much joy as it has now brought us. Thank you for listening and please enjoy the beautiful music video about human cells.” Featuring the catchy melodies for which Purity Ring has become known, “graves” builds toward a dark chorus contrasting with James’ sweet vocals. “We’ll w...
