The Pitch: The new Peacock series Wolf Like Me is a sweet and quirky dramedy that makes great use of the talents of Isla Fisher and Josh Gad. It also, however, happens to fall into too many of the traps which doom the original series being made today for streaming. Again, the show itself is fine. But it can’t escape the category of being just forgettable enough to potentially doom it to obscurity; lingering forever in the corners of streaming services, joining its spiritual sisters Gypsy, Homecoming, Maniac, and countless others. The Reason Why This Review Isn’t Very Long: The central twist of Wolf Like Me is one that Peacock would prefer not get spoiled prior to premiere — in fact, the screeners were sent out with this note from creator Abe Forsythe: “I’d love for audiences to go into wat...
In the public eye, for a few decades there, there were two Bob Sagets. There was the Saget known and beloved by an entire generation of kids as Danny Tanner of Full House, the kind and cleaning-obsessed widower raising his three daughters with some help from his closest male friends. And then there was Saget on stage — the real Saget, it could be argued — known for filthy jokes and, at a later point in his career, making fun of his literally squeaky-clean image. This is the sort of dichotomy that frankly doesn’t exist too much these days, and Saget deliberately played with these expectations over the years. Three years after Full House ended (and only a year after his eight-year stint hosting America’s Funniest Home Videos came to a close) came his film-stealing delivery of the line “You e...
Betty White’s death certificate has revealed that the television icon suffered a stroke six days before she died. Via TMZ, the official cause of death is listed as cerebrovascular accident, or loss of blood flow to parts of the brain. Reportedly, she was alert and cogent following the stroke, and passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 31st, just weeks short of her 100th birthday. According to PageSix, her final words were “Allen,” in apparent reference to her late husband Allen Ludden. White would have enjoyed her centennial birthday on January 17th. On that day, theaters will screen Betty White: A Celebration, a film marking 100 years since she was born, although it was slightly altered following her death. That same date, her hometown of Oak Park, Illinois will ce...
For every Cinderella Challenge story to take shape, a force of nature must fall. And on the most recent episode of All Stars Season 2, the odds-on favorites to win the whole shebang were ousted at the last second after an Arena game that would have made anyone’s palms sweat. Brad and Jodi, aka “Brodi,” who spent most of the game way out in first place, proved they weren’t quite untouchable after “Make the Connection,” which challenged partnerships to jump from moving truck to moving truck to collect keys, open boxes and secure a designated idol. Brad made the mistake of ripping the tops off of boxes rather than untying ropes that kept them sealed and, as consequence, he and Jodi were sentenced to The Arena against allies Darrell and Janelle, who were voted in by the day’s winners, Nehemiah...
Pete Davidson has added his name to the growing list of celebrities attesting to the kindness of the late Bob Saget. Following Saget’s shocking death on January 9th, the Saturday Night Live star opened up about his relationship with the comedian, calling him “one of the nicest men on the planet.” “When I was younger and several times throughout our friendship he helped me get through some rough mental health stuff,” Davidson, who doesn’t have social media, said in a message posted to friend Dave Sirius’ account. “He stayed on the phone with my mom for hours trying to help in anyway he can — connecting us with doctors and new things we can try. He would check in on me and make sure I was okay.” “I love you Bob it was an honor to know you,” Davidson concluded. “Thank you for your kindness an...
To say this year’s Golden Globes Awards are a little different would be an understatement. Historically, the show had typically kicked off awards season with a celeb-filled ceremony airing live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. But after multiple controversies plagued the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including an internal lack of diversity and numerous unethical business practices, NBC canceled the 2022 telecast, leaving the Globes without a broadcast home. When the ceremony takes place tonight (January 9), it will be bereft of any celebrity presenters and will not be live-streamed; the winners will be announced online, a tweet from the Golden Globes account revealed on Thursday. Last year’s telecast was marked by moments of commentary on the HFPA’s f...
On Sunday, Bob Saget was found dead inside of an Orlando, Florida hotel room at the age of 65. News of Saget’s passing was met with an outpouring of tribute posts from the entertainment world. “I am broken. I am gutted,” tweeted Saget’s Full House co-star John Stamos. “I am in complete and utter shock. I will never ever have another friend like him. I love you so much Bobby.” “Bob Saget was as lovely a human as he was funny. And to my mind, he was hilarious. We were close friends and I could not have loved him more,” wrote legendary TV writer and producer Norman Lear. The 2022 Golden Globes represented a truly unprecedented moment for the 78-year-old awards ceremony — for one thing, there wasn’t a public ceremony. Instead, in the middle of both a rising Omicron wave and an ongoing existential crisis, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced last Thursday that it would announce this year’s winners via social media on the designated night, during a private event. Thus, with pretty much the opposite of fanfare, The Power of the Dog (Drama) and West Side Story (Comedy/Musical) were named the best films of 2021 by HFPA members. On the TV side, Succession, HBO Max’s Hacks, and Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad were recognized as last year’s outstanding drama, comedy, and limited series. Jane Campion also won best director for The Power of ...
Bob Saget, the veteran comedian and actor known for his role in Full House, has died at the age of 65. TMZ reports that Saget was found dead on Sunday (January 9th) inside of his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Florida. According to a statement from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Saget “was pronounced deceased on scene. Detectives found no signs of foul play or drug use in this case.” Advertisement Related Video Prior to his passing, Saget had been on a standup tour in Florida, which included a show in Jacksonville on Saturday night. Appreciative audience… I had no idea I did a 2 hr set tonight. I’m happily addicted again to...
The Pitch: HBO’s provocative teen drama returns on Sunday, January 9th, and while plenty of things have changed for the characters in this neon-soaked, nightmarish dreamscape of Southern California, so much is still the same. That’s the thing about addiction, isn’t it? It’s a cycle that’s very, very hard to break. But we as the audience are once again in the hands of young addict Rue as our omniscient narrator, who continues to be lovingly brought to life by Zendaya, the youngest person ever to win an Emmy for Best Actress for a Drama Series. Still Don’t Know Her Name: “I don’t think I’m a good person.” Repeated like a refrain, delivered like a prayer, this sentence is a concise summary of many of the central struggles in Season 2 of Euphoria. To that end, things pick up in fairly familiar...
Sex Bob-omb’s next gig is coming to a small screen near you. An anime series adaptation of the hit graphic novel Scott Pilgrim — which was most famously memorialized with Edgar Wright’s iconic 2010 live-action film — is currently in the works at Netflix. Once they nail down an official series order, the showrunners of the new Pilgrim adaptation will be Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, the former of whom wrote and illustrated the original graphic novel series. Animation work will be handled by anime house Science SARU, and Abel Gongora will serve as director. Wright is also attached as an executive producer. The Scott Pilgrim comics were published in six volumes by Oni Press between 2004 and 2010. Wright adapted them into Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which boas...
Comedies don’t typically include a body count. But right from the beginning, The Righteous Gemstones has defied a lot of expectations. Not only has the HBO series, created by Danny McBride, taken on the often tricky topic of religion, specifically Christianity as preached by a megachurch family, but it’s done so with its own unique blend of pitch-black comedy and serious stakes. “I wouldn’t say we are like Game of Thrones, where someone dies every week,” Edi Patterson, who plays Gemstone daughter Judy, tells Consequence in a recent Zoom interview. “But anything can happen, that’s for sure,” “Wealth and power give these bigger stakes to a family drama, a family comedy,” adds Tim Baltz, who plays Judy’s ever-loyal partner.
