Chris Harrison Stepping Away from The Bachelor Following Controversial Interview

Longtime Bachelor host Chris Harrison is stepping aside from the franchise “for a period of time” amidst a growing controversy over recent comments he made defending one of this season’s contestants against allegations of racism. Earlier this week, Harrison gave an interview to Extra during which he downplayed the past behavior of Rachael Kirkconnell. As Kirkconnell advanced further into this season of The Bachelor, a viral TikTok purported to reveal the contestant “liking” posts containing the Confederate flag and sharing QAnon conspiracy theories. Additionally, photos surfaced of her attending an “Old South” plantation-themed party in 2018 (via The Hollywood Reporter). Speaking to Extra correspondent Rachel Lindsay, who herself was the first-ever Black Bachelorette in 2017...

The organisation behind the annual Big Brother Naija reality TV show says auditioning for this year’s episode was still in the cooler. Laycon won the last edition. MultiChoice Nigeria (DSTV) disclosed this in a statement on its verified Twitter handle today, cautioning Nigerians to ignore ongoing calls for auditions for BBNaija season 6. Gina Carano Reacts to Mandalorian Firing: “They Can’t Cancel Us If We Don’t Let Them”

The Manadalorian actress Gina Carano has shared her first public statement since being let go by Lucasfilm earlier this week. Lucasfilm and Carano’s talent agency UTA cut ties with the actress following a series of abhorrent social media postings, including one in which she compared being a Republican today to being Jewish during the Holocaust. Carano, who also previously spread misinformation about voter fraud and mocked individuals who used preferred pronouns, unsurprisingly showed no semblance of contrition in her statement. In fact, she says she’s “only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before.” “I’m sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer ...

Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge to Star in Mr. and Mrs. Smith TV Series for Amazon

Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge have signed on to star in a new episodic reboot of Mr. and Mrs. Smith for Amazon Prime. The series is a new take on the 2005 feature film which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a married couple who learn that they are assassins belonging to competing agencies, and that they have been assigned to kill each other. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project stems from Waller-Bridger’s overall deal with Amazon Studios. Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo) is on board as a co-creator and showrunner. A release date is set for 2022. Mr. and Mrs. Smith will mark Waller-Bridge’s first starring role since her Emmy Award-winning series Fleabag concluded in 2019. Since then, she’s focused her efforts behind the camera, contributing t...

Paramount+, the highly anticipated streaming service from ViacomCBS, and MTV Entertainment Studios, today announced that MTV’s THE REAL WORLD franchise is returning to kick off the March 4th launch of the rebranded service. The first REAL WORLD installment will reunite the original New York cast in the iconic NY loft for THE REAL WORLD HOMECOMING...

FX’s Hip Hop Uncovered Is a Powerful Watch: Review

The Pitch: Far too often, the history of hip-hop is condensed to make its origins more palatable for younger fans. Black folks in New York — downtrodden by systems that perpetuated poverty, racism, and police brutality — pioneered a form of creative expression meant to give a platform to their pain. However, FX’s Hip Hop Uncovered explores the genre’s complexity. More importantly, it analyzes rap music in a sociopolitical context. From slavery to the destruction of Black Wall Street to the war on drugs to the Black Lives Matter movement, Hip Hop Uncovered reminds viewers of the brutal American history that has always worked to violate and abuse Black people. It also demystifies some of rap’s most prominent figures who were pivotal in the careers of artists like Nipsey Hussle, Nicki Minaj, ...

What the Cecil Hotel Reveals About Toxic True Crime Fandom

In 2013, the body of 21 year old Elisa Lam was discovered in the rooftop water tank of Los Angeles’ infamous Cecil Hotel. What was eventually ruled an accidental drowning took on a life of its own due to law enforcement’s decision to release surveillance footage of Lam’s final moments. Netflix’s new docuseries Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel pieces together this mysterious tragedy by examining Lam’s life and the complicated history of the hotel itself. Yet it also exposes the harmful nature of Internet sleuthing by questioning the ethics of true crime fandom and highlighting the line between compassion and exploitation. Clarice Shifts the Gaze of The Silence of the Lambs: Review

The Pitch: FBI Agent Clarice Starling returns to the screen 30 years after Jodie Foster’s Oscar-winning performance in Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs. The new psychological drama from CBS joins the titular FBI agent a year after she caught and killed notorious serial killer Buffalo Bill. As the title suggests, this iteration of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter series is centered firmly on the titular agent as she struggles with PTSD and the burden that comes with being a hero. Rebecca Breeds steps into the famous cheap shoes and West Virginia accent to make the role her own, delivering a nuanced performance that feels simultaneously familiar and fresh. Set in the post-Waco ’90s, Clarice is an examination of misogyny in the workplace and the tightrope women must walk to avoid being...

Gina Carano Fired From The Mandalorian Following “Abhorrent” Social Media Posts

Lucasfilm has cut ties with The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano following a series of “abhorrent and unacceptable” social media postings. Carano had portrayed former Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune in the first two seasons of the widely popular Disney Plus series. She had emerged as a fan-favorite on the show, and Lucasfim had even considered a spinoff series starring Carano’s character, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, in recent months Carano courted controversy for social media posts in which she spread misinformation about voter fraud and mask wearing. She also mocked individuals who used preferred pronouns on social media by listing “beep/bop/boop” in her Twitter bio. More recently, she came under fire for an Instagram post comparing being a ...
