Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Win Emmy for Watchmen, EGOT Within Reach

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are closing in on EGOT status. During tonight’s Creative Emmy Awards, the duo took home the trophy for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series for their original score for HBO’s Watchmen. Reznor and Ross’ music from the first episode of Watchmen, “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice”, was up against the scores for Hollywood, Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs. America, and Unorthodox in that category. The duo’s soundtrack was released as a trilogy ripe with special cover songs and hidden Easter eggs. Needless to say, it’s definitely worthy of tonight’s win — and its additional nomination for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics (which went to Euphoria composer Labrinth instead). And case you aren’t keeping count,...

Saba Unleashes New Songs “Mrs. Whoever” and “Something in the Water” Featuring Denzel Curry: Stream

Two years after the release of his excellent sophomore album Care for Me, Chicago rapper Saba has returned with a pair of new songs: “Mrs. Whoever” and “Something in the Water” featuring Denzel Curry. Our former Artist of the Month hasn’t been wholly idle since his last album; as the de facto leader of Pivot Gang, he was instrumental in the 2019 release You Can’t Sit with Us. But with apologies to his immensely talented collaborators, Saba has always stood out for his charisma and the intensity of his musical ideas. Somehow, his voice always sounds slightly different song to song, as he modulates his voice to better suit the beat. That instinct is on display in the contrasting new singles. Saba produced “Mrs. Whoever” himself, but the relaxed backing track is merel...

Sam Smith Announces New Album Love Goes, Shares “Diamonds”: Stream

Sam Smith has announced their new album. It’s called Love Goes and it’s due out October 30th via Capitol. To accompany the news, Smith has shared a dance-ready single called “Diamonds”, alongside an accompanying music video. Love Goes is Smith’s third studio album to date, following their 2014 debut In the Lonely Hour and 2017’s The Thrill of It All. They originally planned to call the new album To Die For, but scrapped the title and pushed back its release due to the pandemic. It seems in the time since then, Smith has tinkered with the album. Several of the previously released singles — including the Demi Lovato-aided “I’m Ready”, the Donnie Darko-sampling “To Die For”, and the Donna Summers cover “I Feel Love” — have been relegated to bonus track status. As such...

Pending formal approval, the Commerce Department said that it would delay a previously announced plan to bar TikTok from U.S. app stores for one week. After deals to acquire TikTok by Microsoft and Oracle hit a snag, Donald Trump is moving forward with his threat to ban the popular Chinese-owned video sharing service in the US. Beginning Sunday (Sept. 20th), the U.S. Department of Commerce will block new downloads of TikTok from U.S. app stores. TikTok will continue to work for existing users until November 12th, at which point content delivery restrictions will be placed on the app, effectively rendering it unable to operate. John Coltrane’s Giant Steps Receives 60th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition: Stream

John Coltrane’s classic 1960 album Giant Steps has been reissued in a new super deluxe edition. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. Before his untimely death at the age of 40, Coltrane established a reputation as, if not the very best saxophone player in the world, then certainly the flashiest. His virtuosic collaborations with Miles Davis produced some of the most beloved jazz music of any era, including Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, Steamin’. and a strong contender for the most perfect piece of art ever created, Kind of Blue. Giant Steps came one year after Blue, and it established Trane as a ferocious solo artist in his own right. Giant Steps: 60th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is available as either a double-CD or double-vinyl package, a...

Van Morrison Announces Anti-Lockdown Song Series

The coronavirus death toll is currently 947,000, and Europe is in the midst of its second wave of the pandemic. And yet somehow there are still people like Van Morrison who believe it’s all a hoax and insist on putting more people’s lives in danger. In a statement last month, the Northern Irish songwriter dismissed socially distanced concerts as “pseudo-science”, and called on fellow musicians to join him in demanding a return to “full capacity audiences.” Now, to further drive his ill-informed point home, Van Morrison has announced a series of anti-lockdown protest songs. As the BBC reports, the “Brown Eyed Girl” musician plans to release three different singles in the near future. All of them bear cringe-worthy titles — the kind that Trump or one of those embarrassing Target Flash Mob an...

UK’s Socially Distanced Music Venue Shut Down Amidst Spike in COVID-19 Cases

The UK’s new socially distanced music venue has been shut down amidst a spike in coronavirus cases within the country. The Virgin Money Unity Arena opened in Newcastle earlier this summer, offering live music junkies the chance to see a concert live and in person in a safe setting. Specifically, the venue’s viewing area consisted of a series of enclosed platforms — each spaced six feet apart. Individuals or small groups could watch the concert standing or seated on these platforms, while concessions and bathrooms could be accessed through a one-way system. All told, it was a pretty creative setup that safety accommodated up to 2,500 music fans who turned out to watch concerts put on by Two Door Cinema Club, Sam Fender, The Libertines, Maximo Park, and more. Unfortunately, as the UK fa...

Busta Rhymes and Anderson .Paak Uncork New Song “YUUUU”: Stream

Busta Rhymes and Anderson .Paak will turn this car around on their banging new driving song “YUUUU”. It’s the latest single from Busta’s forthcoming album Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God. As an ode to U-Turns, “YUUUU” is much more metaphorical than literal, though the sparkling production would certainly lend flair to any high-speed swerving in your future. But in a broader sense, “YUUUU” is a stunt track framed as a willingness to change course, retrace, and take care of unfinished business. “Bitch I had to bust a Uuuu!” .Paak sings, his voice high but falling. He adds, “Know I had to finish what I started/ No, it ain’t too late to turn around, is it?” Busta Rhymes takes his high-octane verse in sixth gear, but he also slows down for a memorable bridge: “Now I’m gettin’ back li...

PAUL STANLEY Blasts Anti-Maskers: ‘If You’re So Concerned With A Loss Of Your Freedom, Why Do You Stop At Red Lights?’

Paul Stanley has blasted people who are defiantly skeptical of mask wearing, saying they are posing a risk to themselves and to all those around them. On Thursday (September 17), the KISS frontman took to his Twitter to share a CNN article about an Idaho pastor who was hospitalized with COVID-19 after calling himself a “no-masker” during a service and repeatedly questioning the veracity of coronavirus case reporting. Stanley added in a message: “YOU figure this one out. I can’t. A hoax and non-existent virus has put this guy in the ICU. If you’re so concerned with a loss of your freedom , Why do you stop at red lights? Don’t let the government control you!! Drive right through!!! PUT YOUR MASK ON.” This is not the first time Stanley has blasted peo...

SHINEDOWN’s Next Studio Album Won’t Be As ‘Layered’: ‘We Really Want To Focus On Being A Four-Piece Band’

In a new interview with “Whiplash”, the KLOS radio show hosted by Full Metal Jackie, SHINEDOWN frontman Brent Smith confirmed that he and bassist/producer Eric Bass are in the “beginning stages” of putting together the band’s seventh studio album. Brent stated about their approach to the songwriting process this time around (hear audio below): “We just don’t wanna make the same record twice, if that makes sense. “Each and every time we go into the studio, and I think we’ve gotten better at it over the years, but that’s what you need to do — you need to evolve,” he explained. “You don’t need to write the same song over and over again; you don’t need to write the same record over and over again. So we always ...
