Björk Announces New Album Fossora

Björk has announced a new album. Fossora, the follow-up to 2017’s Utopia, will arrive in the fall, The Guardian reports. The album includes a recurring sextet of bass clarinets, a smattering of gabber beats, and a theme—reflected in the title, based on the word “digger” in Latin—of mushroom life. It also includes two songs written for Björk’s late mother, the environmental activist Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, who died in 2018. Fossora features a song with Serpentwithfeet and backing vocals from Björk’s son, Sindri, and daughter, Ísadóra, as well as contributions from Gabber Modus Operandi, the Indonesian dance duo who brewed up a style that they and Björk termed “biological techno.” Describing Utopia as “a pacifist, idealistic album with flutes and synths and birds,” Björk envisages Fossora t...

Tarantino on No Michelle Yeoh in Kill Bill: “Who Would Believe Uma Thurman Could Kick Your Ass?”

Quentin Tarantino has been frank about finding inspiration for Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill from Michelle Yeoh’s performance in Jackie Chan’s 1992 comedy, Police Story 3. So why didn’t he cast Yeoh in his film? “I asked Quentin the same question,” Yeoh said in a new interview with Town & Country. “He’s very smart. He said, ‘Who would believe that Uma Thurman could kick your ass?’ ” While they’ve never worked together, Tarantino and Yeoh are friends, and she credits the director with convincing her to come out of retirement after her terrifying fall from a bridge on the set of 1996’s The Stunt Woman. She broke several vertebrae. “I thought I broke my back. I thought I was paralyzed,” she explained. Every breath was agony. Tarantino was in Hong ...

House of the Dragon Review: A Beautifully-Made History Lesson From an Ugly Fictional World

The Pitch: Perhaps you are a carbon-based life form with an Internet connection and/or cable TV subscription, and thus are aware of the existence of a little show called Game of Thrones, which for a few years there was pretty dang popular. Well, here’s some more of it! Specifically, here is House of the Dragon, HBO’s prequel/spinoff that does not involve Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but does hope to capture the imagination of an ever-fickle viewing public. To that end, we return to King’s Landing 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen (House of the Dragon is very specific on this point), where Daenerys’ ancestors still hold the very familiar-looking Iron Throne. Though we begin with the line of succession in flux, as a ruler without heirs has to make a choice...
