Name Johnny 3 Tears Best known for D list celebrity status (I knew Tom from MySpace). Current city L.A. Really want to be in Prague. I would be walking the streets and enjoying antiquity. Excited about New album dropping, our best yet in my opinion. My current music collection has a lot of Folk, been on a weird folk journey lately. John Prine and Gordon Lightfoot in particular. And a little bit of Hip hop always. You wouldn’t expect me to listen to I love Enya and Portishead. Preferred format I prefer vinyl for sound quality, but streaming is just awesome. Think of a random song and play it, pretty awesome. [embedded content][embedded content] 5 Albums I Can’t Live Without: 1Green River, Creedence Clearwater Revival It’s just so perfectly...
Blue Chips is a monthly rap column that highlights exceptional rising rappers. To read previous columns, click here. Soon, a music critic will write an essay on the glut of “new” artists copying their influences wholesale. Said critic could quickly point to the hordes of double cup-clutching Future aspirants with higher chances of rehab stints than platinum records or the Young Thug-clone industrial complex. To offer an antithesis to the plague of parodies, they might look to Juwan Elcock, the 25-year-old frontman of BLK ODYSSY. Inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, Elcock wades deeply into personal, cultural, and sociopolitical waters while deftly fusing decades of Black music on BLK ODYSSY’s 2021 debut, BLK VINTAGE, and late June’s BLK VINTAGE: THE REPRISE. “[TPAB] really cha...
It was a sweltering day in Washington, D.C., and George Johnson was running late for an appointment at the James Madison Memorial Building, the massive, bright-white marble box that is part of the Library of Congress. Inside, a high-priced lawyer for Pandora, impatient to move on with a 2016 hearing to set royalty rates for webcasting recorded music, suggested that the three-judge Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) simply call the next expert witness. But the judges decided to wait just a little longer. Finally, an hour after his scheduled time, Johnson, now 55, burst into the room, drenched in sweat and wearing a “Still Pissed at Yoko” T-shirt. (He was out of suits, and his Metro had stalled.) “It looked like he’d just run a marathon,” remembers Chris Harrison, then vp of business affairs for ...
Kelis has much more to say about being sampled on Beyoncé‘s Renaissance album. After venting her anger about what she claimed was Bey and The Neptunes alleged failure to secure her permission to sample the 1999 song “Get Along With You” on the Renaissance track “Energy,” the “Milkshake” star dove deeper into why she feels slighted in a series of videos posted on Thursday night (July 28). Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news “I’m an artist, so I am as Erykah [Badu] said ‘I’m sensitive about my s—,’” Kelis said. “The reality is that my real beef, is not only with Beyoncé, because at the end of the day, she sampled a record, she’s copied me before, so have many other artists, it’s fine, I don’t care about that.” The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams an...
After 12 episodes, zero eliminations, and a refreshingly minimized amount of drama, the seventh, all-winners season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars finally came to a close on Friday morning (July 29), and one queen emerged victorious, earning the title of “Queen of All Queens” and a $200,000 cash prize. Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news As announced at the start of the season, the finale format was that of the Lip Sync LaLaPaRuza, a tournament-style performance challenge in which the final four queens (Jinkx Monsoon, Monét X Change, Shea Couleé and Trinity the Tuck) faced off until only two remained. What Ru didn’t tell us until last week’s episode was that there would, in fact, be two Lip Sync LaLaPaRuza’s, where the four non-f...

There’s no doubt longtime fans of ILLENIUM will feel at home listening to his new single. With its melancholic keys, resonant drum hits and pitched vocal chops, the track, “All That Really Matters,” has all the hallmarks of a signature ILLENIUM anthem. And a stentorian Teddy Swims delivers a typically stunning vocal performance, retrospectively offering sage advice to a younger version of himself. Swims’ visceral lyricism cuts deep through ILLENIUM’s poignant future bass production like a hot knife through butter. “Learning how to live when there’s no one around,” he croons, “is like learning how to feel when the drugs run out.” Check out the official “All That Really Matters” music video belo...
