If you were to take a quick scroll through my Instagram stories then you’d be forgiven for thinking that my job basically involves swatching lipsticks and testing face masks for a living, and to some extent you’d be right. A lot of what I do does involve trying and testing new products so that I can make genuine recommendations, but there’s a whole other side to working in beauty that I love just as much—geeking out over data. From stats about sell-out products to studies on skincare, I’m obsessed with the evidence that proves a product works. So when we noticed that there was one specific beauty product trending in our weekly reports because Who What Wear readers had been shopping it in their droves, I immediately wanted to know why. ...
Mothering Sunday is right around the corner — Sunday, March 14. We all know the most valuable Mother’s Day gift is quality time. But if presence is already in abundance between you and the mum in your life, then we’ve found some treats that she will absolutely love. There are a few gifts that are sure to inspire a smile — jewellery, fragrance, small leather goods, and decor. When it comes to jewellery, we’ve handpicked two pieces from Missoma and Alighieri that would suit either a lover of minimal, classic jewellery or a woman who loves to rock a conversation-starting piece. If you’re unsure about her jewellery style, then a jewellery travel case from Pandora or a gorgeous piece of vintage home décor is a good shout. If the mum in your life loves a beautiful scent, ...
When it comes to decorating the nails of the stars, Mazz Hanna knows her way around a famous finger, having polished the talons of Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts, and Nicole Richie. Which nail colour does she think will be a hit this year? “It’s been a while since mint has been on-trend for nails, but prepare to see it everywhere in 2021,” she says. “It’s timeless, seasonless, and looks great on every skin tone. I also think the bare-nail trend will continue into next year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we continue to see more natural buff and shine and sheer nudes.” Follow Mazz Hanna at @callmemazz. Dressing over the course of the last year has had an interesting effect on the way we see our wardrobes, specifically, it has highlighted which pieces are the most versatile and hardest-working and which are not. Interestingly, the tank top has emerged as one of the unlikelier heroes of our WFH capsule, and if Instagram is anything to go by, we’re not the only ones who think so. While the power of a well-made basic is hardly breaking news, we’ve particularly enjoyed the streamlined aesthetic of the classic white racer-back tank, which has offered a sporty alternative to the boxy-fit tees that have proliferated over the last few seasons. This is a top that was made to be tucked into high-waisted trousers, floaty midi skirt and knitted joggers, and even l...
While the days are gradually beginning to stretch, we still find ourselves looking for new ways to cosify our homes. And nothing can bestow your rooms with hygge appeal quite like scented candles. Let’s be honest: If there was ever a time for bringing a little extra zen into our households, it’s probably now as we see out what is (hopefully) the last leg of lockdown. Needless to say, it’s challenging to separate your work and home spaces or switch off your mind when you need to, something that is made all the more difficult with the dark nights. But something simple like lighting your favourite candle can be an easy way to change the vibe of a room and get you to that happy place. We all have our little routines, whether it’s having a daily bubble bath or doing an ...
It’s like the fashion designers of Paris came together (virtually, via Zoom) to decree one giant anti-loungewear campaign for autumn/winter 2021—and I’m so glad they did. Providing the very opposite to the comfortable, easy, athleisure-led clothes we’ve all been leaning into over the past year, French brands are putting a firm stop on that for the end of this year, providing cooler-than-ever workwear options, outrageous party dresses and the kind of loud daytime looks that we would never have imagined on the streets of this fashion capital pre-Covid. But that’s what being restricted and trapped in one’s rotation of leggings can do; many of us are now dreaming of something more joyful, more elaborate and more agenda-setting to wear when life stops be...
London-based clothing brand Appeal to Heaven’s debut collection Antares is inspired by the stars, because although they are so distant, we all celebrate and derive meaning from them. Antares features second skin turtlenecks, leggings, and oversize silk scarves created with the brand’s first original print that mimics the reflections of water. Antares is named after the constellation Scorpius, which founders Nazanin Shahnavaz and Austin Milne explains is “prominent in mythologies from around the world with associations to the heart, deities, rulers and creators. Our pattern looks simultaneously natural and artificial, as if each variant has been run through a computer program that’s left it distorted and skewed. This is the sort of evocative ambiguity we like.”...
Chanel hosted its autumn/winter 2021 show in Paris’s restaurant Castel, which boasts many small rooms that models walked through like being filled in a tiny house. While the presentation itself was made in black and white, the collection was full of tweed textures, quilted outerwear, and pops of fuchsia, cobalt, yellow, and lilac. “This collection is a mix of two influences,” said Chanel creative director Virginie Viard in a press statement. “The ambiance of ski holidays, which I adore, and a certain idea of cool Parisian chic, from the 1970s to now.” Layers of jewellery, gorgeous tweed coats, embroidered quilted outerwear, and ski salopettes are the focus of Chanel’s autumn/winter collection. Viard continues to play with the neon colour palette of sprin...
Sometimes, it’s the small things that can make an outfit sing—be it a fabric trim, intricate collar, or unusual graphic heel. Neckerchiefs are one such accessory that falls into the “less is more” category, and I have long been a fan of their archival appeal, from the Wild West undertones of a red paisley print to the rock ‘n’ roll flair of a knotted skinny scarf. Despite the fact that the majority of the skin on our bodies is below the neck, we do a very good job at neglecting it. While double cleansing, exfoliating and masking our faces might be rituals cemented firmly in our weekly beauty routines, for the most part, the skin on the rest of our bodies is left to fend for itself. And while the skin on our faces has more demanding wants and needs, the rest of our skin does require at least some basic level of TLC, too. Most notably, at around this time every year, it has a tendency to turn dry. As the seasons change, a perfect concoction of fluctuating temperatures, wind, sun exposure and a change in wardrobe choices (is it warm enough to show a bit of ankle yet?) can cause our skin to turn dry, scaly and ashy. And while dryness on the face ca...
There was no escaping the ‘90s in 2020, and that’s set to carry on into 2021, with a big focus on straight-leg styles. Karolina Ekman, collection manager for & Other Stories, said that the straight cut continues to be a favourite: “We love the timeless appeal of this iconic garment, and our core jeans collection of five new cuts celebrates that.” But it’s not just the high street which is celebrating this trend in the upcoming collections. Heajun Park, womenswear design director, EMEA, for 7 For All Mankind, said similar: “For 2021, we believe that straight fits will be our strongest performers, so we’ve focused our attention on the Alexa and Modern Straight and expanded our selection of colours and washes. I’m pretty sure that when H&M signed on the dotted line to confirm their upcoming collaboration with hot young design talent Simone Rocha, they did not expect to be launching into a world that had been in the grips of a global pandemic for 12 months. I would also hazard a guess that the creative teams didn’t factor-in that their frothy tulle gowns and richly embroidered fabrics would be released to a tracksuit-clad consumer base who now consider listening to Heart Radio’s Club Classics on their sofa with a G&T to be a big night out (just me?) But here we are, and Simone Rocha’s collection is dropping in just under 48 hours and the hype has never been greater. From Margiela and Alber Elbaz to Comme des Garçons, H&M’s designer collaborations have lon...
