Apple is set to host its next event, titled “Peek Performance,” on Tuesday, March 8. The event will be broadcast on Apple.com from the tech giant’s Cupertino headquarters at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. HYPEBEAST will be tuning in live to cover the event virtually. Sources told Bloomberg last month that the showcase would likely announce a “new low-cost iPhone and an updated iPad.” This could mean a new update to the iPhone SE, which may include the addition of 5G network capabilities, alongside an improved camera and a faster processor. The new iPad could be an enhanced Air model that also includes 5G and a faster processor. The outlet added that a new Mac with Apple-designed chips may soon be unveiled, alongside an iOS 15.4 update, which was released for public beta testing in January...

Ukraine’s nuclear power plants are at ‘unprecedented’ risk as fighting continues

Nuclear experts are increasingly worried about the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants as Russia’s invasion of the country continues. The conflict has the grim distinction of being the first time warfare has exploded in a region so heavily reliant on nuclear energy. “The situation in Ukraine is unprecedented and I continue to be gravely concerned,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in an introductory statement to the agency’s Board of Governors meeting today and shared with the press. “I have called for restraint from all measures or actions that could jeopardize the security of nuclear and other radioactive material, and the safe operation of any nuclear facilities in Ukraine, because any such incident could have severe consequences...

Ford sells electric scooter unit Spin to Berlin’s Tier

Ford is selling its electric scooter operation Spin to one of Europe’s top shared mobility companies. Tier Mobility will take over all of Spin’s operations, marking the first time the Berlin-based scooter company will have a foothold in North America. The companies declined to disclose the sale price, though the CEO of Tier said it was an all-stock deal. Spin first launched in March 2017 in Seattle after working with the city to create a policy framework for regulating dockless bikes. The founder, Euwyn Poon, was inspired to create a dockless bike company after visiting Beijing and seeing the growing interest in micromobility services in that city. The company soon pivoted to electric scooters after Bird’s success in Southern California. A year later, at the height of the scooter boom, For...

Elden Ring patch fixes PS5 save bug

Elden Ring developers, FromSoftware, have rolled out a fix for the bug that caused the loss of game save data on PS5 (via Polygon). In a tweet, developers confirmed that they’ve made “changes to save progression even when the game is not terminated” on PS5, in addition to issuing a few other patches on PC. (2/2) PS5:Changes to save game progression even when the game is not terminated. — ELDEN RING (@ELDENRING) March 2, 2022 Last week, Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco warned PS5 players that putting the console in rest mode or turning it off while the game is running may cause the game to save improperly. Players were instead instructed to save the game manually by exiting through the menu. The new patch should hopefully fix this problem, but it’s probably wise to continue quitting out fr...

Eufy’s newest doorbell camera is also a smart lock

Anker’s smart home brand Eufy Security today launched its latest product on Kickstarter. The $399 Eufy Security Video Smart Lock is a video doorbell and smart lock in one and is expected to ship to backers in May 2022, with a general release in June. The somewhat unique two-in-one security device notably uses a fingerprint reader to unlock the door and can send alerts when specific people arrive or leave using facial recognition, according to the company. An apparent amalgamation of Eufy’s $260 Eufy Smart Lock Touch & WiFi and $200 Eufy Video Doorbell 2K, the Video Smart Lock provides a slight bargain compared to shelling out for two devices, but there are obvious issues with a dual product here. For starters, most people struggle with video doorbells, often not realizing they are supp...

Russia holds OneWeb rocket launch hostage, issues conditional demands

In its latest response to international sanctions and growing geopolitical tensions, Russia’s state space corporation, Roscosmos, is making a list of demands of its customer OneWeb before it agrees to launch the company’s upcoming mission this week. OneWeb’s satellites were scheduled to take off on top of a Russian Soyuz rocket on March 5th in Kazakhstan, but in light of these new demands, it seems likely that launch will not take place. In a video posted to Twitter, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, outlined in an interview that he wants assurances from OneWeb that the company’s satellites will not be used for military purposes. Roscosmos also demanded that the British government, which is a primary shareholder in OneWeb, divest its stake in the company. If these demands aren’t met, ...

Fully Jarvis standing desks are 15 percent off until March 21st

If you’ve been working from home, but haven’t invested in a standing desk yet, you’re in luck. The Jarvis bamboo-topped standing desk, its most popular model and a favorite among several staffers here at The Verge, is currently discounted to $509.15, compared to its typical starting price of $599.99. Fully’s Jarvis whiteboard standing desk is also discounted to the same $509.15 price, replacing the bamboo desktop with an erasable whiteboard for jotting down notes or just doodling. At the prices mentioned above, both models measure 24 inches deep and 30 inches wide, and both can be adjusted to be as low as 30.1-inches or raised to a little over 49 inches...

Women’s interest in crypto grows, but education gap persists: Study

Even though female investors are increasingly interested in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, there is still a significant knowledge gap when it comes to these topics, a new study reveals. BlockFi noted that a third-party survey panel conducted the study on Jan. 28, 2022, and included 1,031 female-identifying Americans between the ages of 18 and 65. According to a recent study by BlockFi focused on the shifting attitudes toward cryptocurrency, 92% of the women surveyed have heard about crypto, with almost one in four (24%) already owning some. In contrast, 80% still find it difficult to understand and 72% believe investing is too risky. Per the study, over one-third of women intend to purchase cryptocurrency in 2022, with 60% of respondents saying they would buy crypto in the next ...

BitConnect Founder Disappears Following Justice Department Indictment

Back in November last year, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit against BitConnect over a crypto Ponzi scheme worth $2.4 billion USD, resulting in the sale of $56 million USD in cryptocurrencies by the Department of Justice after the coins were seized. Now under indictment, the company’s founder and CEO Satish Kumbhani has reportedly gone missing. According to new reports, the SEC has lost touch with Kumbhani and does not know where he is. The Indian citizen was charged with defrauding investors of $2.4 billion USD in his Ponzi scheme just last week and is due to be served his court papers. The Department of Justice is also charging him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit commodity price manipulation and conspiracy to commit international money lau...
