SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink is now available in 32 countries around the world, the company has announced. Impressively, Elon Musk’s space company says it’ll ship “immediately,” contrary to earlier issues that caused customers to wait months to receive their dishes. Starlink shared a screenshot on Twitter showing the service’s availability map, which shows the service as “available” across most of Europe and North America, as well as parts of South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Much of the rest of the world, including the entire continent of Africa, is shown as “Coming Soon” with availability expected at various points in 2023. 32 represents an increase in the amount of countries Starlink serves compared to earlier this year, when SpaceX said it was available in just...
Leica Camera has debuted a special-edition version of its acclaimed Trinovid 8×40 Binoculars as an homage to Icelandic–Danish artist Olafur Eliasson‘s installation Life, which was shown at the Fondation Beyeler (Switzerland) in 2021. Eliasson, who’s well known for his works that play on the perception of color, dresses the binoculars in a bright neon green leather trim with special “LIFE” engravings and serial number text indicating the product number (1/250). The technical specifications of the new collector’s models are the same as the serial production versions, which were presented in 2019 as an homage to the iconic Leica binoculars of the ’60s. Premium glass types and coating guarantee true-to-life colors and high-contrast viewing from edge to edge while an ultra-light and robust buil...
Things don’t seem to be calming down over at Twitter despite coming to a $44 billion USD deal with tech mogul Elon Musk. The social media platform has now laid off two of its top staff members in what appears to be a company shakeup. According to reports, Twitter’s general manager of consumer products Kayvon Beykpour and general manager of revenue Bruce Falck have both been fired by CEO Parag Agrawal. The former was on paternity leave at the time of the decision, and took to the platform to announce his departure, explaining that “Parag asked me to leave after letting me know that he wants to take the team in a different direction.” The departures come amid Twitter’s endeavor to cut costs. A source close to the matter has revealed that the company has already paused most hiring and is now ...
New Apple rumors have surfaced regarding future generations of iPhones. While the rumor mill has been turning regarding what the aesthetic makeup of the upcoming Apple iPhone 14 Pro would look like, analysts are already looking ahead to the iPhone 15. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently took to Twitter to announce that Apple is reportedly looking to change the aesthetic and structure of the new iPhone starting in 2023. Apple is supposedly looking to replace the lightning port with USB-C, in line with the most current MacBooks. Kuo recently toldMac Rumors, “Apple’s installation of USB-C in iPhones appears to have been influenced by the policy change in the European Union.” The European Union recently announced that it would introduce a law to unify USB-C charger types for smartphones. Since 2013, AT&T has quietly bilked customers out of hundreds of millions of dollars with a bogus “administrative fee,” a fee it more than doubled to $1.99 a month in 2018. For a few years there, a California class-action lawsuit made it seem like AT&T might finally get taken to task. But this week, both sides told a judge they’d settle for just $14 million — meaning customers may get less than 10 percent of what they paid AT&T, while AT&T gets to keep on charging them. According to the proposed settlement agreement in Vianu v. AT&T Mobility — which still needs to be approved by a judge — just about every AT&T Wireless postpaid customer in California since 2015 will be eligible for an estimated payment of between $15 and $29. But again, that’s only a fraction of wha...
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently took to his Instagram to share with tech enthusiasts the latest capabilities of the company’s high-end virtual reality headset, Project Cambira. While Zuckerberg posted a video that blurs out the actual headset, he states that he wants fans to focus on what the device can do without revealing what it looks like. Meta has highlighted that the upcoming headset will give wearers the ability to interact with virtual objects that are overlaid onto real-life surroundings with full-color passthrough. In the demonstration reel, Zuckerberg can be seen playing with a virtual creature that is superimposed onto the real world. Another scene shows a user sitting in front of a virtual workstation before looking down to write on a real notepad, suggesting that Cambria ca...
How much you enjoy The Essex Serpent, an Apple TV Plus adaptation of Sarah Perry’s 2016 novel, might depend on how much you enjoy seeing Tom Hiddleston brooding in a misty field while wearing cozy wool sweaters. For a lot of people, that will probably be enough of a hook. (It was for me.) But thankfully, the six-episode series offers a lot more than great hair blowing in the wind — it’s a tense and heartfelt exploration of grief and belief and how much those two things can mess with you. The great sweaters are just a bonus. The show primarily follows two characters. One is Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes), a recent widow and a budding natural history scholar who has quite the fixation with sea serpents. She spends her spare time researching them via old books, maps, and newspaper clippings. Wh...
In case you haven’t noticed, chipmakers are in the middle of an upscaling revolution. AMD, Intel, and Nvidia are all out to prove that algorithms can trump native rendering performance. Why spend precious GPU cycles on native 4K when you can actually get a sharper, more detailed image by upscaling smaller pictures instead? It’s an argument that’s never quite convinced me, I’ll admit. But AMD’s new FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0, arriving for the first time today in an update for Deathloop, may have the potential to change that on PC. The new game patch also includes some key accessibility options — more on that later. PC Gamer now says FSR 2.0 “really looks better than native 4K,” and Hardware Unboxed has a phenomenal video showing off FSR 2.0’s performance in almost every type of shootou...
Apple has been coaching retail store managers on how to try and talk employees out of unionizing, according to Vice. The report says the company has sent around a document full of talking points like “an outside union that doesn’t know Apple” or its culture, or “most union contracts give preference based on seniority.” The document also encourages store leaders to “touch base” with employees about potential union activity. This comes at a time when there are union drives at several Apple retail stores — two have officially petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to hold union elections, and another is looking to do so. It’s been pretty clear that Apple would try to fight these efforts; the company hired anti-union lawyers, and at least one worker has told The Verge that the company h...
Earlier this week, someone posted cell phone videos of Tony-nominated actor Jesse L. Williams and co-star Michael Oberholtzer that were taken during a nude scene from the play they’re in, Take Me Out. Deadline reports that Second Stage Theater, where the play is performed on Broadway, had taken steps to keep cellphones out of audience members’ hands during the play, requiring the use of Yondr pouches that are supposed lock cellphones away when someone is in a restricted area. It’s unknown whether someone unlocked the pouch (there are many videos online claiming to show how to open the bags without the patented magnet designed to open and close them) or simply smuggled a device in. A statement posted on the theater’s Twitter account said “Taking naked pictures of anyone without their consen...
