Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are currently in negotiations with Dave Bautista to star as Kratos in the upcoming live-action God of War series. The potential casting follows original lead Ryan Hurst exiting the project due to an on-set injury.
Hurst, who was cast in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep during production, prompting Amazon and Sony to recast the role in order to resume filming by the fall. Bautista, who maintains an established relationship with Amazon MGM Studios through films like The Wrecking Crew and My Spy, brings the physique required for the lead character without requiring extended physical prep time.
The two-season series order adapts the narrative of the franchise’s recent video games, following Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus—played by Callum Vinson—as they journey across the Norse realm. Developed by showrunner and writer Ronald D. Moore, the project features an ensemble cast including Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Max Parker as Heimdall.
