Jason Momoa Will Reportedly Star in Live-Action ‘Minecraft’ Movie

Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in an upcoming Warner Bros. live-action film based on the popular video game, Minecraft, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie, which is named after the aforementioned gaming title, will be directed by Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess.

The film has been in the works for quite some time — Warner Bros. first announced the project in 2014 before sharing that Free Guy director Shawn Levy would helm the movie. The next year, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney was confirmed to direct, though he left the project in 2018.

Mary Parent and Roy Lee are producing, and Jill Messick will receive a posthumous credit for her work on the project prior to her death in 2018. Mojang Studios, the Swedish gaming developer behind Minecraft, will also produce via Lydia Winters and Vu Bui.

Minecraft, which reported almost 140 million monthly users in 2021, has sold more than 238 million copies since its release in 2011, making it the best-selling game of all time, according to THR. Notably, Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios for $2.5 billion USD in 2014.

Warner Bros. has not yet revealed a release date or further cast information for the upcoming movie.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Netflix is turning Exploding Kittens into a TV show and mobile game.
