Emma Thompson Tosses Insults and Students in Teaser Trailer for Matilda the Musical: Watch

The girl lost in daydreams and the headmistress of nightmares face off in the new teaser trailer for Roald Dahl‘s Matilda the Musical. It’s coming to Netflix this holiday season, and stars a nearly-unrecognizable Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull. Adapted from the Tony-winning Matilda the Musical, this Netflix film is directed by Matthew Warchus with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Alisha Weir (Darklands) plays the titular hero, a young girl with a sharp mind and the world’s dullest parents. While her mom (Andrea Riseborough) and dad (Stephen Graham) watch trash TV, Matilda quietly reads. This endears her to her teacher Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), but draws the ire of Trunchbull (Thompson), a disciplinarian who craves nothing more than to see the children fall in li...

BTS Members Clarify Future of Group: “We Are Not Disbanding”

Following a “family dinner” video that aired as part of BTS’s annual FESTA anniversary celebration on June 14th, the members of Korean pop septet are sharing more details about their next chapter. While the conversation (which spans over an hour) initially seemed to indicate that BTS would be taking a break from activities as seven, including an English translation that used the word “hiatus,” the members and management company HYBE are clarifying that BTS’s “second chapter” will see the septet “remaining active as a group.” This will include filming content like their treasured variety show, “Run BTS,” among other team activities. At the same time, this strategy shift will incorporate more solo work from the members, beginning with J-Hope, who is set to headline the closing night of Lolla...

Chris Evans Slams Homophobic Reaction to Lightyear Same-Sex Kiss: “Those People Are Idiots”

Conservative moviegoers will find infinite (and beyond) reasons to scrutinize more inclusive representation in children’s media. But Chris Evans, who voices the title astronaut in Pixar’s Lightyear, is letting the backlash of the film’s same-sex kiss scene roll right off his back, calling its naysayers “idiots.” “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said in a recent interview with Reuters Television. “Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story is one of constant social awakening and growth and that’s what makes us good.” Lightyear — which serves as a Toy Story prequel of sorts — made some upsetting headlines earlier this year after Pixar employees published an open letter accusing Disney of censoring LGBTQ+...

Sylvester Stallone Plays an Exiled Mob Boss in Teaser Trailer for New Series Tulsa King: Watch

Sylvester Stallone plays a former mob boss who steps out of the penitentiary and into a new kind of prison in the teaser trailer for Tulsa King. Sly’s first recurring TV role debuts November 13th on Paramount+. Tulsa King comes stocked with the kind of writer’s room that usually brings the Emmys to their knees. The series was created by Taylor Sheridan, the don of the Yellowstone-verse, and boasts as its showrunner Terence Winter, award-winning scribe of The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Stallone stars as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, and as the trailer opens he’s just finished a 25-year prison stint. “I married this life,” he says, “And now, after keeping my mouth shut, I’m gonna see if it married me back.” He’s q...

So Long, Internet Explorer: Microsoft Finally Kills Off Browser at 26

Even most Windows users would be surprised that Microsoft’s once-dominant Internet Explorer was still operational until today, but now the web browser has officially been shut down. Now out of support, Internet Explorer 11 has been pushed out in favor of Microsoft Edge after nearly 27 years in existence. Microsoft first announced IE would be retired in May 2021, revealing June 15th, 2022 to be its expiration date. “Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure, and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications,” the company wrote in a blog post. Starting today, the few stragglers who still use Internet Explorer (yes, apparently they exist) will be redirected to Edge. IE...

No, Amber Heard Was Not Fired from Aquaman 2

Despite recent rumors that Amber Heard has been cut from Aquaman 2, a new report from Variety confirms that the actress will not, in fact, be recast in the sequel. While rumors swirled that Heard — who plays Princess Mera in the franchise — was set to be replaced by Nicole Kidman in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a spokesperson disputed the reports in a statement, saying, “The rumor mill continues as it has from day one — inaccurate, insensitive and slightly insane.” False reports of Heard’s firing come after a jury found the actress guilty of defaming her ex-husband, Johnny Depp. Heard wrote a Washington Post op-ed in 2018 in which she described herself as a victim of abuse, and Depp claimed that the story — which never mentioned him by name — damaged his career. Brooklyn Concert by Would-Be Assassin John Hinckley Jr. Cancelled

John Hinckley Jr., who shot President Ronald Reagan and three other men in an unhinged bid to impress Jodie Foster, will not be performing in Brooklyn after all. The venue, Market Hotel, has released a lengthy statement calling their decision to host Hinckley “stunt booking” and suggesting that such a performance would be inappropriate in our current “dangerously radicalized, reactionary climate.” Hinckley was released into the custody of his mother in 2016 after spending 34 years in institutional psychiatric care. Today, June 15th, he became free of court restrictions for the first time since his 1981 arrest. He was set to celebrate on his “Redemption Tour,” which included a sold-out stop in Brooklyn on July 8th. “If we were going to host an event for the principle, and potentia...

Santigold Announces Comeback Album Spirituals, Shares “Ain’t Ready”: Stream

Santigold has announced her new album, Spirituals, out September 9th. As a preview, she unleashed the defiant single “Ain’t Ready.” For Spirituals, Santigold recruited a list of contributors including Rostam, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Boys Noize, JakeOne, Doc McKinney, Psymun, Ricky Blaze, Lido, Ray Brady, and Ryan Olson. In a statement, the artist revealed how she got over writer’s block. “Recording this album was a way back to myself after being stuck in survival mode,” Santigold explained. “It wasn’t until I made the space to create that I realized I wasn’t only creating music but a lifeline. California was on fire, we were hiding from a plague, the social justice protests were unfolding. I’d never written lyrics faster in my life. After having total writer’s block, they started...

Foals on the Ecstatic, Unified Energy of New Album Life Is Yours

Back in November, days before the release of Life Is Yours‘ lead single “Wake Me Up,” Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis assured listeners that this album would be a return to a “sweaty, late-night dance floor.” He wasn’t kidding: Life Is Yours is undoubtedly the most groove-oriented, shimmering Foals album yet, destined for the peak of a wild night and smartly positioned as an antithesis to a long period of lockdown. If you are a Foals fan, the streamlined style of Life Is Yours is a bit of a left turn, albeit one that’s closer to the frenetic dance punk of their debut Antidotes and the introspective glow of Total Life Forever. Though a restless energy populates the dance-centric Life Is Yours, there’s very little agitation in the mix — where previous Foals jams like “I...

Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie Invites You to “Dave’s Place” on New Single: Stream

Bret McKenzie is taking a pause from his comedy group Flight of the Conchords and swooping towards his first-ever solo album Songs Without Jokes this summer. Before the LP is released on August 26th via Sub Pop, the New Zealand musician has shared another sample of it today with the new single “Dave’s Place.” Like most of his songs, McKenzie originally wrote “Dave’s Place” on his guitar at home. What began as a simple country tune eventually grew into a “Dire Straits-esque” blues-rock jam after bringing it to the studio with producer Mickey Petralia in Los Angeles. Despite the song’s peppy, sunshiney flair, the meaning of its lyrics is much more bittersweet. “The song is called ‘Dave’s Place’ after the late Dave Bianco,” McKenzie explains in a press release. “Dave was an amazing audio...
