Dave Chappelle has stirred up a lot of conversation about cancel culture and offensive comedy since he decided to make transgender people the butt of all of his jokes, and now, Jerrod Carmichael has entered the chat. In a new interview with GQ, the openly gay comedian questioned Chappelle’s tendency to double down on transphobia, calling his position “an odd hill to die on.” Carmichael was originally proclaiming his love for Generation Z after sharing an anecdote about his young cousin being his most supportive relative after he came out as gay. “I love this generation,” the comedian said. “I actually fuck with them, and fuck all those comedians that are going so hard against them.” Naturally, then, the conversation turned to Chappelle, who has recently become a figurehead for co...

Flying Lotus is back with “The Room” and “You Don’t Know,” two new songs that feature vocals from soul singer Devin Tracy. Listen to the tracks below. Flying Lotus met Devin Tracy during a studio session, but their collaborative singles suggest they forged an easy rapport. Tracy offers soulful vocal runs in “The Room,” mourning a fractured relationship over swirling guitar and acrobatic bass. “Why do I fall in love so easily?/ You made me soft, I’m down to my knees,” he sighs. These relationship troubles flow into “The Room”‘s B-side. “You Don’t Know” really means “You don’t know how it feels,” as Tracy insists that his lover is oblivious to his pain. A compressed beat skitters in the track while soaring horns and light keys make his sadness sound beautiful. Advertisement Related Video “Th...

Lzzy Hale has shared a powerful and personal message in celebration of Pride Month. The Halestorm singer-guitarist wrote on Instagram, “I’m unapologetically bisexual,” after mentioning that she hid her “bisexuality for a long time.” While it’s not the first time that Lzzy has spoken about being bisexual, her new social post served as a direct message to her fans about embracing their sexuality. Last year, during a Twitter Q&A session, when a fan mentioned that it was not easy living as a gay man in the Bahamas, Lzzy responded, “You are living your truth … and that’s all that matters. I’m a bi gal in an 18-year relationship with a man. We write our own stories, my dear.” Lzzy, who has been in a long-term relationship with Halestorm guitarist Joe Hottinger, took to Instagram on Wednesday...
Marilyn Monroe smiles while Norma Jeane sobs in the new teaser trailer for Blonde, the NC-17 biopic starring Ana de Armas. It arrives on Netflix September 23rd. The 66-second clip opens with Monroe in the green room, crying while receiving makeup. “Please come,” she whispers. “Don’t abandon me.” The teaser ends a short time later in the same spot, as she practices her winningest smile. In between, we see colorized snapshots of the world’s biggest movie star striding down the red carpet or striking a pose on the silver screen, as well as more black and white imagery as she wraps her arms around herself and pushes through a crowd. Blonde is directed by Andrew Dominik and based on Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name. “Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the ...
During a performance at Brooklyn Steel in late March, Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo showed the world a side of himself that few outside of a small community had seen. He wore his fur suit on stage, offering the public debut of his furry alter-ego, Mortis Jackrabbit. Now, the band has given an interview to Brooklyn Magazine where they spoke about this revealing moment and how CSH’s music has always had roots in the furry community. “I wanted more furries in the crowd,” Toledo recalled of that March night. “It was very impromptu. My friend tried finding someone else to wear the suit but he couldn’t find anybody. So at the last minute, I asked him to bring it and I wore as much of it as I could.” Drummer Andrew Katz added, “A lot of Car Seat’s music is furry adjacent because,...

No lies here: This December, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion Pinocchio adaptation will come to life on Netflix. The offbeat director shared another sneak peek of the project at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival today (June 15th), giving viewers a look at his own animated interpretations of the wooden marionette (voiced by Gregory Mann) and his woodcarver Geppetto (David Bradley). In an exclusive teaser screened at the festival (via The Hollywood Reporter), Geppetto is startled awake by a noise in his attic during what seems to have been a long, late night of woodworking. “Who goes there?” he exclaims. After climbing up the creaky ladder, Geppetto finds Pinocchio alive for the first time: “You asked for me to live,” he responds. “I’m your son.” Understandably, Geppetto ...
Back in January, Father John Misty teased a snippet of Lana Del Rey covering his Chloë and the Next 20th Century cut “Buddy’s Rendezvous.” Now, the track has now been brought to all streaming services after previously only being available as a 7-inch single included in the limited edition box set of the album. Listen to it below. With airy, piano-driven production highlighted by strings and a saxophone, “Buddy’s Rendezvous” is the perfect match for Del Rey’s throwback aesthetic. Even though FJM has said the song is written from the perspective of a man who gives some “pretty shitty advice” to his daughter after getting out of the prison, certain lyrics like “What’s the point of being everybody’s girl?/ Maybe you think that way there’s no chance getting hurt/ Living for no one costs me...
The collision between acoustic instrumentation and crackerjack production makes for a lush and widescreen experience. Mills’ harmonium on “Herem” bubbles with dread from the song’s swirling brew before programmed drums carry the arrangement to a cathartic finish; clarinet swells offer an immense moment of bliss on “Teeth”; Hadreas’ sighing vocals on “Pop Song” turn to playful coos when chimes and percussion bang into the mix. Compared to previous albums, such rousing peaks are less immediate, on tracks that stretch past the seven-minute mark and leave choruses in the dust. Spend time with this music, though, and its glimmers of hooky beauty leave a profound impression, like watching a peacock preen and flash its magnificent plumage for a moment at a time. At points, Ugly Season reminds me ...
